Default HPI MT2

OK, I was well on the road of getting a Traxxas Revo, but my dad had his reasons and wouldn't let me spend $450+ on my first truck. So I am either getting a XTM Racing Nitro X-Cellerator or a HPI Racing MT2. I am leaning towards the MT2 because it is 4WD, but I am wondering how fast will this thing go stock? I know that the X-Cellerator goes about 50mph, stock. What about the HPI MT2 (not the 18ss, just the original)? Will it do 45? Or what would it take to get it to 45-50? What engine would really bring this beast out?

I dont think the X-C does 50, but don't quote me on that. if you want a faster one, just get the 18ss kitinstead of the mt2. An OS engine would work well in it though.

my MT2 did 38ish on a very lean tune through a jugs gun... i wouldn't base my first truck off of how fast it goes though. i would base it off of toughness, suspension setup, and ease of getting parts.

depending on your LHS that might limit you to HPI, traxxas, and losi if you want to get parts the same day you need them.

So is a MT2 better that an X-Cellerator for a first car? I would like something fast and tough at the same time. Does the MT2 meet these requirements? Is it tough? Is it pretty fast?

i would say it's tough, like any other truck there are areas that need to be addressed... the ones that i found were the c-hubs and the diffs. $30 in parts fixes that pretty easily though, and it can be run without those upgrades.

i would say that it was a good first truck because it's what i got and i have learned quite a bit on it... take that as you will.

if i had to do it again i would have either saved more and gotten an LST2.

speaking of MT2 for first car. I just got one and have been trying to get it runnnig for 5 hours, it's my first nitro. I get it running and lots of gas pours out of pipe. Please help, also everytime I touch the gas it stalls. Is something already broken or stuck? Is there any other adjustments that will help

Is it possible to get a HPI MT2 to go 50mph? Also what engine would make it do this speed?

In the kit version, the 18SS, is there gluing involved or is it all just screws?

18SS should hit that easy...

Just bought the 18SS today for my MT2. Killed the .15mill

You will need motor mounts, "blue" locktite, motor mount screws, 52 tooth spur gear, chasis screws. Also the MT2 is roto start and the 18SS is pull start. ( just a thought).

Im on my 4th tank and driving it around the yard 1/4 throttle ( leaning as I go) and its doing whole shots!

So the kit doesn't come with motor mounts, motor mount screws, spur gear, or chassis screws? If not then I'd rather get the RTR and not hassle with getting parts and having to put them inthere later. What are some common problems with the MT2 RTR? I heard the diffs strip. Where can I find better diffs?

Oh yeah,
18SS should hit that easy...
.

I don't think it can because HPI states that the 18SS kit goes only 46mph.

the kit comes with all that ****, DoDaMan was talking about just getting the .18SS engine and bolting it on the MT2 RTR chassis.

the diffs are bad, the first thing you should do when you get the truck is shim them... a couple of guys made posts about it. either way you need to shim the pinion up and the ring in so you get a good consistent wear pattern. i stripped both of my stock setups, but once i shimmed them up (and replaced the ring and pinion that i trashed) they were fine.

Think of it this way, the MT2 18ss is for generally experienced R/C'rs, if you don't have experience dont get the kit. You can get more power by adjusting the gearing, adding a tuned pipe, ETC.

I have heard a lot that the diffs strip out very easily. Is this true, or was that just on the first batch of the trucks when they first came out? Are they better now or is it still the same?

it definitely happened to mine. HPI claimed to fix the problem by going back to machined gears but the ones i got were regular cast pieces.

hold on man... you seem to be talking two things here..

teh MT2 RTR has the .15, the MT2/SS is the one with the .18 in it.

The MT2/ss comes as a kit in the box, it includes everything that you need to get the truck running with the exception of the radio system. With the kit, you'll get motor mounts, all the screws you'll need, gears, mufflers, headers.. the whole shot.. The kit form comes with the new and improved diff gears in it to put in the truck also included are the shims to get the diff right.. with that said, I've had mine since November and have broke one arm since getting it.. and that was because a tree hit it..

where are you from?
