Default Which wears first, the piston or the sleeve?

in my little mind I'm thinking that the sleeve would wear more.. can you re-use the piston and just put in a new sleeve?

you need to replace both. the piston and sleeve come as a matched set.

I have never seen where they sell just the sleeve and if they did I would think the sleeve cost a lot more then the piston. I would not take the chance and get both.

I know when I bore cylinders I mark each piston for each hole so if there is a little difference in the piston each hole is fitted properly. Good point!

I know on cars it is possible to put what we refere to as an oversized piston, meaning that the actual diameter of the piston and sleve are bigger than stadard is this possible with RC engines??? Just out of interest.

here's the deal....

I've got a brand new OS 18, it's never run.. absolutely will not go!!!

I've got a worn out OS 18, this one ran like you wouldn't believe, but finally after a year, wore out...

now, my thoughts are...

both engines are pretty much paperweights.. so, rather than having them sit, I'm thinking take the two and combine to make into one hopefully working engine.

I will not spend any more money on these OS paperweights, so buying a new piston/sleeve is definitely not an option.

Whenever I've seen an engine that just will not run it is almost always a carb problem. So.... take the carb from the good one and put it on the one that never ran. Just to check to make sure it has a good piston and sleeve put your flywheel on it and turn it over by hand slowly. When it gets to the compression stroke don't turn it all the way through just hold it with some pressure on it. A good piston and sleeve will hold all of the compression and a bad set will allow leakage so you will be able to slowly turn the engine over with very little resistence. The key here is slow. You want to be able to feel any leakage.

Italic - I don't have the reciept, it's already been back to that shop, who after charging me 50 bucks to make it run gave it to me, I carried it across town (maybe 12 blocks) threw it down on the asphalt, tried to run it and it ran like ****!!!

gubbs - thanks man... I'll do the carb swap and see if that helps.. hmmm.. that just opened a whole new can of worms with another engine that I may or may not be having problems with.. will an OS carb fit a HPI engine? How can you tell stuff like this?

Oops losing the reciepts is never a good idea.

for me...

buying OS engines isn't a good idea either.. but whatever, even if I had the reciept, I've been jerked around both by the LHS and OS themselves enough that I won't do it again... I may be pissed off, but I'm not stupid, if I can get one of the five OS engines that I have to run, I will be just a happy camper!!!

Hey mate you have to make the best out of a bad situation. And I think I would probably have done the same in yous case. Hope you get one of them running. I hate the fact though that one spends $200 - $300 at your LHS and thay are all friendly with you but when you return with a problem and no reciept they dont even want to know you. Where's the love man? [sm=punching.gif]

Now as it is like some motorcycles that have plated cylinders so if you bore it you would have to replate or sleeve it so not cost affective.

I am sorry to hear this but as a rule OS makes one of the best user-friendly engines made. There are not many places that do much if you do not have your paper work and it is not here fault you lost it. I do wish you luck as all my OS engines have run like a Swiss clock and all ways have for MANY gallons of fuel. I am sorry but I cannot help but think you are not doing something quite right.
I do wish you good luck.

If the carb swap doesnt' work, then I don't see any problem with switching sleeves. I know and I agree that they are a matched set...But if it doesn't work, then try something else. It probably wouldn't be ideal, and maybe will wear funny or wear out sooner. But I would give it a try...What have you got to lose?
