First off.. slow down and read what your typing.. it will make it easier for everyone else to read the post if you correct it first.
All starter boxes need power.. so YES you need batteries.. in most cases (2) 6/7 cell packs, or a 12v gel cell.
The general principal for the use of the starter box is that when you apply pressure to the rear of the box (normaly by attaching the glow ignitor and pushing down) there are spring loaded contacts, which "turn on the power"..
If nothing else, find the product/model number of your starter box, go online to the manufacturer's website and read the manual or tech notes if listed.

Nah... The starter box has better performance when you use a hamster running in a wheel to generate power. Its energy efficient.

Starter box is not needed. I made a very large flywheel and when I go to start it I just push it on the pavement ...like those "pull 'em back, and let 'em go" toys. LOL

I just use a portable blow torch, when I want to start it I just prime it and use the torch to heat the cylinder until the fuel detonates and kicks it over! Works everytime!

come on realy you think you just put the car on the starter box and push down on it? The best way to strat it is to just spin the tires its starts. Not really it dont work like that. Of course you need electricity!!!! It dont take a rocket scientist for that one!!!
