NO ALUMINUM SHOCK TOWERS!!!!!!! Thats a big no no. If you use a aluminum shock tower on the rear it will crack the tranny case in a hard hit and thats something you dont want to replace on a regular basis. Here is what you need to start with and have a durable truck. You dont need a new pipe unless its the 2.5 Jato with the plastic exhaust. If you get or have the 3.3 you dont need an exhaust. It will be plenty fast enough as is.
1. Front RPM arms
2. 2.2 wheels and good tires like Yokohamas or moabs
3. Upper chassis brace
4. Motor saver air filter with pre filter
5. New resinator pipe ( 2.5 only)
6. RPM wide front bumper ( will save turnbuckles )
If you do these things you will be ready for anything.

To replace the shock tower it only take 4 screws. To replace the tranny case it takes like 15 plus you have to move all the gears over to the new case. It sounds like you do no have to much experiance with this so which would you rather do? If you do not have the stock shock tower just get on from your lhs like 5 dollars.
This is why you do not want a aluminum shock tower
First upgrade you should get is tires. Road rage II for street. For off road get the dirt hawgs or moabs depending on how much grand clearance you want.
Second the front rpm bumper
Also get the rear rpm a arms for when the stock break.
Also a chassis brace (search ebay: jato chassis brace)
Make sure the ofna air filter is really tight and dose not come off easy if it dose replace it back with stock.
Also it is good to have extra turnbuckles and spur gears on hand. (spur gear is $3 at lhs: get a whole set of turnbuckles on ebay for about 10-15)

RE: hop ups for a traxxas jato...
get a rear wing...will save the plastic shock towers, makes it look good, and is a good carrying handle.

i hate aluminum. use aluminum for the a arms and axle hubs only. using it for shock towers and bumpers puts unessiary stress on what plastic it connects to. carbon is also good for chassis ridgidity but only use it as a brace, again not for towers.
as for tires slap on some masher 2000's. lots of tread life and great on and off road. they also help abzorb shock of the jumps.
the wing also effects areo dynamics belive it or not. it makes the car easier to controll and makes it sure footed on street.

and when you are ready for a faster engine skip the 3.3 and go straight to the os 18.
ALso you should post some pics so we can see what you are working with.

Not to mention that some people tranny can barely handle the os 18 never mind a big block...

RE: hop ups for a traxxas jato...
If you race regulation ROAR you cant go bigger than a .15 motor and have to have a single speed transmission. As the Jato sits it is not legal to race. To make a Jato legal you need 2.2 wheels, single speed tranny and .15 size motor.
