it's to keep an eye on the temps of the motor, just like any other motor if you run it to hot you'll burn it up. i use this one, it stays on the truck. so you have less to carry with you http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXHEM4&P=ML

temp guages are optional. they are helpful when tuning as long as you arent dependant on it...search around for more info on this...youll need fuel, 12 AA batteries (or 8 AA and the traxxas rechargable RX pack) and 1 or 2 7.2v batteries, fuel filler bottle, after run oil or wd 40 (i use nothing but i dont suggest it), needle nose pliers, a flat head screw driver, the jato comes with air filter oil but it doesnt last long so some more wouldnt hurt, extra glow plugs are a must, and if you wanna save some frustration then get new tires because the stock anacondas suck. as far as other parts, just upgrade as they break just make sure if you do get a new part, do not get integy parts...they are over priced pieces of crap. that should be just about it

Like others have said the temp gun is optional but great to have expecially for a noobie. Good running temps are between 220 on the low side and 270 running hard or very finely tuned. You will see better power near the 270 mark. If you can get it tuned to be around 260-265 running hard it will be good.

if you get the battery pack for the car (rechargeable) you can relocate it to the center of the chassis rather than back by the wheelie bar

it makes it better on road (and some would say worse off road)
