Hey everyone
Hoping to get some opinions.
I have long wanted a 1:10 scale Delorean body and they are simply impossible to find.
So, I have (99%) decided to make a run of them myself.
An acquaintance of mine is creating a scale accurate CG model, which will then be made into a polyjet prototype. From that prototype we will make a fiberglass mold, and from that mold we will vacuum form the polycarbonate bodies (.03 starting thickness.)
From my perspective this the best way to go. I am a perfectionist; I want a scale accurate, detailed body, and that's what I'll get by doing it this way.
I am talking about a stock Delorean, not the Back to the Future version (although I certainly want one of those, too, and it could be a possibility as well.)
Either way could be a cool drifter body.
So here is my quandary: The only realistic way I can do this (it is quite expensive) is if other people want the bodies, as well. This will easily set me back a lot of money. The only way it will work is if enough other people are also interested in having a Delorean body, and I knew I could make most of my costs back. So what do you guys think? Anyone else also interested in such a body? If there is enough interest, I'd probably have the means to make a run of one or two hundred bodies. If not I'll have to scrap the idea for now.
FYI the plan right now is 200mm with 10inch wheelbase, unless there are better suggestions out there.
(Please note this is not my business. This is not what I do for a living. I am a filmmaker by trade, and R/C is a hobby.)
Anyway yeah I think this will be fun.
Andy
** Note, I may end up going with an aluminum mold, depending on cost etc. Fiberglass may work well if it is water cooled.

Right now the mold has still not been made, so size options are all open. The plan at this point has been to make it a typical 1:10 scale 200mm with about a 10inch wheelbase. How much different would it have to be to fit a savage?

So you're probably looking for a body that would have a similar size/fit to the HPI 1967 Pontiac GTO body for Savage. ( http://www.hpiracing.com/products/en/17000/ )
I would have to double check, but I think it could have a similar fit, although probably wouldn't be quite as long. I think that GTO is about 20"x7" whereas a Delorean would be closer to 17" long.

Awesome I will post more info as I have it. Right now I'm working through some licensing issues and refining the design.
Unless anyone has reasons to do otherwise, the plan is to have a 254mm wheelbase, which will put the body at around 17" long and fitting 200mm wide cars.

Very cool.
Yeah it's definitely being designed to look best for on-road.
I really love scale looking on-road cars.
Update: Body is 200mm wide with 257mm wheelbase.

i imagine it could be adapted to fit on a 1:10 Slash 2wd chassis (just for kicks)... @$30, count me in.
you might have some luck with those 3D Printers... it might cost less that way?

Hey guys
Sorry for the silence. I moved to another state recently, and we are finally getting settled.
As for an update, the Delorean body is still moving forward. I am working out some details and getting finances in order.
I will update again as soon as I can.
