I have 7 for a lifetime (prefer it over CS)...I just like to stick to advice that is legal

if you're computer saavy you can get the GIMP at www.gimp.org, which is very photoshop-esq..just requires a bit of work for setup since it was originally made for linux

for mostly designing you could try Adobe Illustrator I guess. more design-oriented than photoshop, but I feel that photoshop is a more robust all-around app

the 30 day trials are free, the actual programs are quite expensive unfortunately ($650 for photoshop). http://www.adobe.com/products/tryadobe/main.jsp has all of their products available for tryout, including photoshop and illustrator.

you could also try Paint Shop Pro 8. there is a free trial on the website, and can be purchased for just $110. I used this a long time ago before I got photoshop. much more robust than paint. its worth a shot I think. http://www.jasc.com/products/paintshoppro/?

personally I prefer photoshop, but I'm biased because I use it all day, every day at work

if you have a cable modem or DSL or any high speed internet, I would recommend trying them all and see which you like. Since we were on this topic I got curious, so I'm downloading Paint shop pro right now to see what its like - I'll get back to you with my opinion soon.,

i have heard that illustrator is better for designing things, but I haven't used illustrator much
