Default Best Body(Aerodynamically Speaking)1/10th

Alright, let me start by saying that I've got a 70 MPH 1/10th 4-tec and I need to keep it on the ground. So, I've done the obvious. A Lola body from Proline(Protoform). The guys at my local hobby shop said it was the best, and I believe it is....but....it leaves something to be desired in the looks department. I was wondering what the best 1/10th body is that is actually a real car in real life. Like a corvette, trans-am, camaro, etc. I've tried the following bodies, and not 1 of them has even come close to what a lola can put out.

HPI Corvette C-6
HPI Trans-Am
HPI Lamborghini Murcielago
HPI Ford Mustang Shelby GT-350
HPI Dodge Viper GTS-R(worst of them all, believe it or not, even the mustang is better than this one)
Proline(Protoform) Dodge Charger

I love anything american muscle, and I can handle foreign cars to a certain extent, but I loathe ricers like the Mazda-6, Acura RSX, and Honda Civic. I can take the more exotic looking ones though like the NSX. So, anybody know which 1/10th body is the best mix of handling, top speed, and looks? Thanks in advance for your input.

well if you look at the lola it is designed to go fast and be stable, the real car bodies are made to look like real cars. if you figure out the scale speed it would be crazy fast. i don't know how to transfer the 1/10 scale speed to full size tho.

actually pretty easy:

if 70 mph is the 1/10th, multiply it by 10 to get the 1/1

700mph (scale) [X(][:-][&:]

My guess is most of the air turbulance and drag comes from underneath the car?

Yes i think your right, our cars are open underneath causing turbulence, has anyone tried fixing a piece of say perspex(maybe USA call it lexan?)underneath to seal the body and thus create ground effects as in F1?

I did a lot of research on bodies a while ago and found that most of the bodies you named, all fold in at the nose when you get to a good speed. The body I found that was perfect is made by a company named PTI and its some sort of Nissan race body. I think its called the R390 or something like that. Its the orange and white body in the pic. The body is made of some kind of stiff lexand and it doesnt fold at the nose but its a little more fragile if you crash. My LHS stopped ordering from PTI and then I was stuck until I found that I can cut and make my own for high speed runs. I found that if I cut an HPI super nitro body about 3/4inch down the middle and about 2 inches on the rear and mount my own wing, it works perfect. Thats the blue car. I messed up about 3 bodies before I got it just right but now, thats the only body I run. Unless you know what youre looking for, you'd never know its been cut to fit. I used carbon fiber stickers to hide all the scars and then used somemore just to make the carbon fiber look uniform on the body. The body is the HPI BMW LM12 supernitro body.

If you look really closely, under the carbon fiber in the front, you can actually see where the sticker is raised all the way up the side of the car. Thats where the cut was made and if you look at the side shot, you can see where the lines for the original wheel cut was and I had to cut it just ahead of that because of the shorter car.

Check out these shells.

During the Worlds Fastest RC Car Challenge last year, Nic Case entered one Custom works Intimidator (2WD) that hit 160 MPH unofficial record. He was using a Custom Works Bullet Shell. Now that is hauling. Nic’s other entry was an Electrified Nitro TC3 (4WD) that went 134.4 MPH, Official Record and the shell used on this car was also made by Custom Works. You may want to check them out.

If you want to check this out, RC Car Action, Nov issue covers the event.

Wait....you cut a body in HALF? You said "middle". I'm assuming you meant in half. How in the ever loving world did ya' get her back together?

And SFC_K, those look fabulous. Absolutely. I'm bookmarking them, for the next time I need a body. Call me speed craaaazy. Problem is, all of those bodies except the Thunderbird Pro Mod are out of stock.

Of note, I got a Dodge Stratus recently, it works almost as good as the Lola in a straightaway, and it is slightly less effective in the corners.

I cut it down the middle and used the 3/4 inch strip that was left over to refuse the car back together. I used sho-goe to do it before I painted it.

Just a question....what would happen if you attempted to use a solder iron to meld it back together again? I've fused gas tanks before like that, but I don't know how it'd affect lexan. Probably would have left a big scar though. I was just thinking of integrety. Does shoe goo really hold it together that well in a wreck?

BTW: SFC_K, they just put the Rocket Wedge back IN-STOCK. Will order one as soon as I need a new body. Thanks, bro![8D]

Im not sure what would happen if you solder a body together. I honestly dont think it will work. Ive wrecked the car a few times since I took those pic and its still holding on. I had to replace the wing once but the body is holding up better than I thought. I know I hit the radar trap about 3 weeks ago at 93 when the car cought flight and landed on its top. No damage whatsoever.

A little off-topic, but 93?! What kind of car do you have? And what kind of hop-ups?! [8D] Is that body good for cornering or is it a strict straight away car?

I wonder if my little tech could go that fast....[:-]

The car is an HPI Racer2. It has an RB modded Rex 321P. 26T pinion 37T spur and a final gear ratio of 1.83/1. Weighs just over 3lbs with wheels that are 2.8" tall.

if u were worried about the nose buckling at a certain speed, why not just beef it up on the inside, with shoo goo and, i cant think of the material right now, ill see if i can find it. or even a thin layer of maybe fiberglass???

Just a guess, but maybe he didn't re-enforce it for weight issues.

Actually the sho-goo doesnt add that much weight but I thought it was the perfect aerodymic body for what I was looking for and I love the "wow" factor when people look at it and cant figure out what it is. I was running SuperNitros before with that same body uncut and it was perfect, so I just stuck with it.

the most areodynamic bodies besides lola bodies (the ones you always see on 1/8 scale cars) are the dodge stratus, alfa romeo and mazda 6 (or 3, sorry i forget) when most people think of areodynamic they think of in a straight line but th bodies i just said are the best around a track because they improve the handling of the car in the turns and in the straights

Even though i dont believe that stock 4tec 3.3 hits 70mph i'd say lola is the best choice you can make. If you like something more realistic get the HPI corvette c06 or the kyosho ferarri 575 gtc with adjustable rear wing (i use it and it works perfectly during wide corners! The rear just sticks to the ground). Stratus and mazda cedans are fine too but work better on racecars with centered weight (that's why rules allow only 4door cedans for ELME and IFMAR race events). Get an FR body with big hood and big rear wind for maximum grip. Also i believe the best car for top speeds (except lola) is HPI stilleto body.

You can believe what you want, but I radared the car at 64 MPH last week(with the LOLA on, naturally), and it still had snot left, I don't think it'd have any trouble hitting 70. I ran out of space is all.

Next week I'll try two new bodies. Stratus and Parma Oval Outlaw. See if I can't get that full 70 out of her. Stilletto looks very interesting. Corvette I have, and it keeps it on the ground, but can't make the same kind of speed passes that the Lola shows, and the ferrari, well, I'm not sure.

EDIT: Is the green and yellow one the HPI TVR Sagaris(I think that's its name)?
