Default Georgetown Event is NOT being moved!!!

here are photos.

There is some concern that the field is a bit unsafe for a contest with the height of the corn and potential for accidents.

What we have considered since I am the CD, to move the contest to New Berlin. We have agreed to continue with the tradition of donating half the profits to Team USA F3a program.

Please let me know, we will have a decision by tuesday.

How close are the corn rows from the thresholds of the runway?

Do you guys fly that low a baseline that the corn becomes an issue?

We have a comp at Wingham this weekend and the situation is similar but instead of corn there is a sheer drop the other side of the runway.

Cheers,
Jason.

The corn is three feet from the edge at each end of the runway and along the entire outer edge; also the corn is over 6 feet tall, as shown in the photos. When there is a cross wind (usually) there are unseen eddy currents over the runway that require your attention during landing. For those of us that fly here regularly, we have gotten used to it, and land with a little more speed. The plus side is that the runway is 600 feet long and 60 feet wide. The minus side is that it may take a long time to find a plane that happens to go down in the corn.
For those that do not remember, last year our flying field was surrounded by wheat that was only knee high at the time.
The Georgetown Club will support whatever decision Chuck and the majority chooses.

Hmmm, it's not alowing me to vote, but my vote would be to keep it. That corn has nothing on the sugar cane that surrounded the Crescent City R/C field.

I would vote for New Berlin but I hate that it's about an extra 50 minutes to an hour drive.

The New Berlin field is a very good one for flying.

Here are some ideas i am considering for the contest.

1) Takeoffs are scored accordingly... landings are given 10's regardless of position etc. Safety first.

2) In some cases, if a pilot is unsure or would prefer that a more experienced pilot land their plane, then that will be allowed. Safety first.

Just thinking out loud.

I've flown out of far shorter fields surrounded by corn, in Muncie. Even flew off a county road surrounded by corn in Muncie. Flew out of sugar cane at our field, and at the Lafayette field. Searched for AC Glenn's canopy in a cornfield, for Chip's (I think) airplane in a cornfield in Muncie...... and 600 feet is a long runway. I'm not scared, keep it there! But I'm planning to go either way, my job permitting.

I would continue to score T/O and Landings..... above Intermediate. Advanced and Masters should know how to handle this. My 2 cents.

By the time of the event the corn will have started turning, or drying out. The field is planted with field corn so the farmer will let the ears dry out before harvesting. Guys the the only issue about flying with the rows of corn starting about 10 to 12 feet from the long edge of the runway is if the wind blows out of the east then depending on how high the wind speed is, you do get a bit of turbulence. Most of the time the wind has been blowing straight down the runway. I know my vote does not count either, but we would love to have the event at Georgetown.

If the corn will be turning it will be dry and that could present a fire hazard it a hot engine crashes in the field.

4U the corn is usually harvested sometime during September, depending on the rain if any. This corn has to be dry for harvest.
