Hi,

Anybody tried these props in pattern? How did you get on? Are they much lighter than a comparable size APC?

Well I have seen one or 2 used. Jim Woodward installed one at Andersonville and said he loved it at the time. Not sure how he feels about it after some time has passed.

I haven't played with one yet, but will soon. Specifically I'm wondering about the 16x11 3 blade.

I know that you were looking for an answer on the Mezlik prop, but I think most guys spend enough on the planes and motor, that they really can't justify buying a carbon fiber prop unless it just absolutely the best thing sliced bread.

Actually I love Bollys, they are just a tad loud. They pull like nothing else. But if you scrape the tip on the runway, well, life will suck

Well, with the amount we spend on the model all in, the extra £25 or so for a Mejzlik prop isn't much if its an improvement over APC. Plus how many times do you break a prop in F3A? Ive been using the same prop for 2yrs and havent broken one since way before that so its not like its not going to last.

Was just curious that all. Alot of IMAC guys use them, why not us lot aswell.

The biggest advantage of Mejzlik CF props over APC is wider hub. This is important in a gasser with six small bolts. An APC hub is too small, so it can not be used on a gasser.

Mejzlik Cf props are generally as heavy as APC's. 16x11 3-blade is 126 g, about the same as 17x13 2-blade APC.
Haven't run one yet, so no experience. Also 17x10 3-blade narrow blade is interesting, 86 g.

More or less CF props are good for showing off, they look cool.

I have tried a Mejzlik 16*12 on my 140DZ. Visually the Mejzlik appears to be nothing but a clone of the APC 16*12. The only difference is that the Mejzlik has a thicker trailing edge and is about 0,3mm thicker all over. The weight of the Mejzlik is 86g. This is 20g less then the APC (106g). The Mejzlik has several nice characteristics compared to the APC, but the thick trailing edge is not a good thing.

When changing from APC 16*12 to Mejzlik my engine dropped 100 rpm and prop noise was louder. I hade no sound measuring device, but I could clearly hear a difference. I cant explain the sound in English (more whining, hissing ?), but its what one could expect from the thicker trailing edge. For this reason I have stayed with the APC.

I may try to sand down the trailing edge later to see if it makes any difference. I would like to use the Mejzlik for the weight saving and beautiful finish. As you say the price is not a problem. I think we often spend a lot more money to save 20g.

For anyone that would like to try Mejzlik the good thing is that you do not need to buy several sizes to experiment which works best. All pattern sizes seem to be APC clones so buying the same size as your favourite APC is enough (If that Mejzlik size exist). Correct me if im wrong. The only one I have compared closely is the 16*12

Anyone tried the carbon fiber props from Engel modellbau?

I haven't tried, but read somewhere that APC props flex slightly when under load (like pulling the plane up in the vertical) and the pitch lessens, so you get more rpm and more thrust upwards (so almost like a variable pitch prop). The carbon are so stiff that they don't flex and you don't get this effect.

Most guys us APC because the are the best affordable choice for experimenting. If you want to try something different one of your friends probably has it.
I haven't run the Mejlik 16*10*3 but a friend did and quickly switched back to an APC 15.75*11*3. They guideline I have heard is Bolly props feel like 2" less pitch than APC and the Mejliks are 2" more.

Love my Mejik 20x8, very smooth and quiet at 5k rpm where I am flying most. It is perfectly balanced lateral and static out of the box = less shake over some others. downline braking is unbelievable - I have to keep some throttle or plane will stop on dowlines.

ps carbon fibre bike wheels make a funny whirring, high pitch noise. Might of been similar to the prop noise you heard.

Angus maybe you should have a look at the Engel modellbau carbon props. They have a 17*12
I have never seen any of the Engel props but from what I have read they are of good quality. I have no idea how they compare to APC.
