Default HUNTSVILLE HAPPINESS !!

From Bruce Underwood on the SPA mail forum.

HUNTSVILLE HAPPINESS !!

Huntsville, AL.....May 15, 2005: 23 SPA Pilots spent the week-end Flyin', Funnin'
and Fellowshippin' at the Capt. Trey Wilborn Field in Huntsville, AL this weekend.

The weatherman smiled on us for a little over 1/2 of the day on Saturday, then, the
predicted thunderstorms curtailed flying for about 2 to 2 1/2 hours. Late Saturday
afternoon following 2 full rounds of SPA contesting....the NSRCA conducted flying
exhibitions by Lamar Blair, NSRCA President, and Jim Ivey, member of NSRCA
and prominent SPA pilot. After actual demos, the group moved to the modern
Chuck Facemire Memorial Clubhouse for "Classroom type" study of both AMA
and SPA maneuvers. Blair explained that flyers planning on participating in the
AMA Nats must be certified since most will be Contestant Judges there.

Sunday brought a BEAUTIFUL day.....morning clouds allowed an early start which
with the limited use of SUNSPOTS for the early part of the day allowed two good
rounds in all classes and three for Novices. This brought the total to 4 rounds for
all classes except NOVICES who flew 5 rounds. Incidentally, there were 7
NOVICES, 4 of which, flew in their FIRST SPA contest.

It was an almost unbelievable success
story of "Hard LUCK" to WINNING for Novice Champ Julian Jaramillo of Marietta,
GA.....1st time competitor and member of the "on the Ball" PCMA flyers from the
Peach State. Julian, crashed his beautiful ARF on Saturday early for which he
received the HARD LUCK trophy....then, thanks to the benevolence and courtesy
of fellow PCMA clubbers (more reps from PCMA participated in the Huntsville
contest than any other club on the circuit)...he was loaned an airplane by, Bob
Bixby, (I think it was Bob's airplane)...and managed to WIN the hotly contested
Novice Class. What a story......there'll be lots of stories surrounding this victory
relived on the circuit. When Julian was presented the HARD LUCK award early
in the Ceremony, he was humbly grateful......but, It isn't very often you see the
sincere gratitude expressed like Julian did when he was announced the winner
of the class. You could detect small tears of gratitude as he almost yelled out
in broken English......."thank you, thank you Sir....I wish thank-you to Mr. Boob
Bixby and wife". Its' times such as this......that you folks in PCMA who coached
and worked with Julian......can swell with PRIDE....for your' efforts in recruiting
new participants in our Sport/hobby.......Ya'll done GOOD !

Webmaster Ed will more than likely have the results posted on the website within
the coming 24 hours....meanwhile....thanks so very much to all who attended. I
just ran by and visited with Mr. and Mrs. Ken Nix (Ken & Nancy) to again compliment
them on their conduction of the event and they too echo our sentiments.
Special thanks to 3 modelers who shared in judging chores allowing many of
our pilots more freedom to fellowship. They were Ray Craig of Anniston, AL,
Bill Collins of Guntersville, AL and Bill Harden of Decatur, AL.

Oh, in addition to the HARD LUCK trophy, another special award was the
PRETTIEST BIRD award.....won by Berry Roper of the PCMA club. His handsome
Daddy-Rabbit with the air-force markings was voted the prettiest. Photos will
hopefully be displayed in a day or so on the website and will follow in a coming
edition of the SPA Newsletter.

All participants in Huntsville were provided with printed contest Flyers promoting
the Cave Springs, GA SPA contest July 9 & 10, 2005.
