Default Electric Pattern

So what motor/ESC/Battery/prop are you guys running.


I've got a CA Models Fantasy coming, and I'm thinking of making it electric. I just need some info.

Between 10-11lb I think you'll find most are running a C50-14XL (if you use a Hacker motor), the 77-O ($240) or 90-O ($420) ESC (Hacker again), a 20 to 22x12 prop. I do believe the 90-O is the best choice but it's over an ounce heavier - but will provide for the best reliability. I am using the 77-O and watching current very carefully. The specs indicate it should work fine, but I know a few FAI pilots that have burned up the 77-O's. The new 5s4p (smaller, lighter (>4oz less weight than the 5s3p's)) from TP are working great for me, much better than the 5s3p. You'll need 2 each of course to make a 10s pack.. and if you are not aware of LiPo issues or charging, look into this very carefully before taking the plunge. I started with a Venus 40 to get myself into Electric - it was a good foundation for me. The Venus with a B50-10S, swinging a 16x10 prop is a very capable pattern plane. You would use a 5s3p (5s4p) battery - get two and you can transition to the larger plane using both batteries to make the 10s pack.

I'm familiar with Lipos........I was just wondering what motors and what batteries people have been using.

I've only seen 3 electrics in the pattern world so far.......

I haven't looked into batteries yet,

So what kind of price range are we looking at?

Motor/ESC/Batts (at least 2 sets, one to fly while one charging, {so that makes 4 batteries}

You might also consider a Neumotor 1515/2Y with 6.7-1 gear ratio. It is on par with the Hacker power-wise and is less expensive and made in the USA. Has a finned case just like the Hacker. Check it out at www.flydma.com They have excellent customer service.

I have been running one for a month on 10s3p and makes gobs of power.

If you can wait a few weeks, you may be able to get a Castle Creations high voltage controller for a lot less money than the Hacker. I have the O-90 Hacker and it is expensive and sometimes hard to find.

You can also consider the Plettenberg 25-13 or 30-10 Xtra motors. No gearbox to worry about.

Plettenberg Xtra 25-13, Schulze 32.55K controller, APC 19-12 and TP 5S3P 6000 pro-lite packs. Orbit pro charger with output to PC for graphing charges. Model is a CA Impact (never again...) and with the big packs and some twekaing it's now at 10lb 10 oz. Even at that weight, there is plenty of power for Masters sequence verticals. With the smaller packs I can knock off 7 oz more to get to 10-3, which should be FAI enabled

Several folks running this combo successfully.

I am flying an Electric Eclipse (same fuse as the Fantasy) with the Hacker C50 14XL motor, Acro 90 ESC, TP 6000 5s3p Gen II Lite batteries and the APC 22-12e prop. I have almost unlimited vertical. The plane came in at 10# - 7oz. This is a great flying combo. I am sure the Fantasy would do well with a similar motor set-up. One word of caution, you need to direct the air flow over the batteries in hot ambient days. This weekend it was 95F. My maximum battery temperatures was 132F. My maximum motor temperature was 140F. Wide open throttle was 66 amps. I am going to modify my ducting to get more airflow over the motor and batteries. I would like to reduce the temperatures at least 5 to 10F. So far after some 20 flights, I have had no failures of the equipment.

There you have it.. many options. TP batteries will be between $300 - $350 each x 2 packs.. and you'll want 2 sets for sure. The newer 5s4p's are better than the older 5s3p's and the 4p's are 4.5oz lighter. Go slow, watch your amps / watts.. watch the heat closely.

I'm flying the same setup, but on a CA Impact. Your Eclipse is over 13 oz less in weight! Are you sure about your weight?

Jim,

Yes I'm sure about my Eclipse weight at 10# 7oz as I measured it both on my traditional baby scale and a digital postal scale. Both agreed within 2 oz. First I started with a hand selected light weight fuse at only 28oz for fuse, canopy and chin cowl. Then I used honeycomb material for internal trays and supports. I am using a cut down Bolly F3A wide CF gear and the BPG CF wing tube and sockets. Lastly, I only used a 800ma NiMh Rx battery. I have also used a 100 ma pack, but it added 2 oz to the total weight. I believe most of the Impacts struggle to stay under the 11# limit.

Steve,

Congrats on your E-Eclipse's low weight!!! The wings on my Impact are definitey heavier than my foam/balsa wings on another plane. At 11 lbs 4.5 oz, my Impact does have unlimited vertical. My Acro 90 controller is set at 3 degrees timing.

Hi Lim,

I bought the Acro 90 controller "programming-box". The box is neat and simple to use. You plug in the box to the controller, and to its own 4.8 pack. Then, you plug the motor batteries (yes) to the contoller. The controller will let you step through functionality. Although I don't know what the timing actually does, the effect is to INCREASE amp draw (and power) I believe. Anyway, you get more power .
