Default Futaba Digital Low Profile Aileron Servos

Looking for advice based on ACTUAL use,not opinion, on the Futaba S9154( 64oz.-in. , 0.14 sec./60 degrees) VS. Futada S9150 (81oz.-in. , 0.18 sec./60 degrees ). They will be used in a 2 meter pattern ship . Reason I ask is because my Futaba S9102 low profile servos were worn out after 106 flights ( probably sooner ) on my 120 pattern ship with good care and a soft mounted engine. THanks !

I have just replaced the 9150 with 9154 on my Smaragd. After about 20 flights, I havn't been able to find a huge diference between the two, guess I'll keep flying.

I have flown two pairs of 9102's in two different planes. Typhoon 2+2 about 400 flights and Enigma 259 flights at the moment and I haven't had a single problem with any of the four servos. Maybe you have got bad servos..

I feel the 9150 is slow (on 4cell pack) and has only a few advantages in comparison to the 9102. So far I haven't tried the 9154's but I might get a pair of those next.

Has anyone used these digital low profile servos with regulated 6V power? I guess it is okay.

Tuomas, I take your word that you've gotten over 400 flights on 9102s; that is a lofty number , indeed. When I say worn out , I mean the pots required replacement . Ben at Radio South said they really needed it . My symptoms began at roughly 70 flights- bounce when the stick was abruptly released and centering problems which required subtrim adjustment to limit.
I just want to be certain others have put reasonable numbers ( 150- 175 flights ) on either of these two (9150 and 9154 ). At this time , I'm leaning toward the 9154s because of the speed , the torque loss isn't all that great... 64 oz.-in. should be plenty for my Focus 2 ailerons , right ?

I prefer the faster speed of the 9154 over the 9150, I've installed the 9154 gearset into the 9150 for conversion in some cases. Typically I replace the pots after 30 or so gallons of fuel (9411SA's seem to need pots & gears @ 20 gal.), I've not had gear wear sufficient to require replacement in 60+ gallons. A plus with these servos is the diameter of the output gear, roughly 2X that of a 9411, and high tooth count. The final gear is plastic which is driven by metal, all results in low gear wear. The 91xx is heavier than the 9411 and "feels" different, generally requiring much less expo. All these comparison are with a 5.7v regulated supply.

I have been using the 9150 servo for some time. I am about the order the 9154 replacement gear sets for my 9150 because I want the extra speed to improve snap performance. They are a great servo and I wouldnt hesitate to recomend them. As Earl stated the output gears are huge on these servos so wear on the gear train is not an issue I have had to worry about.

I am not knocking the other manufacturers but I have found that the gear wear on Futaba servos generally to be much less than JR servos especially when it comes to the metal geared versions. IMHO the futaba's are best.

I also had 9102's (1.6 x .9 x 1.0) in both of my Angels Shadows. In looking for a replacement I ended up with the new 9550's (1.6 X.8 x 1.0) instead of the 9150 (1.9 X 1.1 x 1.0) or the 9154's. Why? Size and mounting was the biggest issue for me. The 9550's are about an 1/8!QUOT! shorter overall in mounting length but otherwise fit. The 9150 is quite a different size. Also the 9550 can be run at 6V but I am running them at 5.1 regulated. They are more than enough for a 9.5 lb two meter aileron and make an improvement over the 9102's. The centering is better and they offer instant response. My rolls show a difference. I can tell as I only changed one of my shadows and have flown both in a session with almost identical setups. The digitals are definitely worth it in my opinion.

did i understand right that u can make a 9154 out off a 9150 with just use the gear from the 54?
i have a set off 9150 on my Temptation that have total 350 flights i think and the gears start to get a bit worn out , but those have been used with a 2stroke engine and i think thats give less stress to the servoes as well as rest off the plane compares to 4 strokes.
Those have been running on 5,9v reg Tuomas 2oo fligths on my Onyx and 150 on my Temptation.
I heard that one guy i know have to charge ca 350Mah after 1 flight with Ys140 i charge ca 150 Mah and O.Fremming if i dont remember wrong is using some like 50 Mah on his new El. Oxalys ....maybe or i'm sure this also gives the servoes and all the plane less stress!

Rune,

That is correct. You can turn a 9150 into a 9154 by replacing gears. Tower Hobbies have them in stock.

S9154 it is ! They will fill the rather large aileron servo cavity Piedmont has cut on the Focus 2, are low profile , robust enough , quick ,and I like what I read about the gearing . Thanks to all who responded. I'd still appreciate hearing from others who have had experience with either digital.

Hello Rune and guys

My impression was that the 9150 would accept 6V, but I guess better safe than sorry. Futaba instructs 6V n/a..

Maybe I am the one who has had luck with 9102's. as a friend happened to call yesterday evening and asked me if I had pots for the servo as his had worn out. I know many people have had succes with them but it seems like the pots can get dirty or even worn out pretty soon. I will run a servo check a couple of times on my servos.

My current consumption is around 150mAh/flight and I think it is quite a lot compared to my previous planes. With the Typhoon 2+2 it was around 80mAh/flight and with Midas 70mAh, so the Enigma draws roughly the double. All of these planes are powered by YS 4stroke. Enigma with 6,2V regulator and the others with a standard 5cell NiCd packs.

What kind of current cosumption you guys have?

Tuomas,

S9150 and S9154 will accept regulated 6.0 V but not an unregulated 5-cell pack.
I have had this confirmed from Futaba.

Generally I have measured that current consumption will almost double in migration to digitals. Iow. when changing all control surfaces from analog to digital servos and other factors (plane, flying style) remain the same. Increasing voltage will increase current consumption roughly in square.

If a servo gear is too flexible for the application the pots will wear fast as the output shaft and the pot is in constant movement caused by vibration. I can assure you S9150/9154 is very rigid and one of the most heavy duty servos used in F3A pattern and in especially aileron. I can not comment or compare to JR as I do not have any first hand experience on them.

We can discuss this further this weekend ...

I have a question to ask since I have 2 9150 servos to go in a 2m plane soon.
What and how does the 9154 gear set change the 9150?

Less torque, but speed? or same torque, more speed?

Thanks,

9150:-

Speed: 0.18 sec/ 60 deg

Torque: 5.8 kg-cm

9154:-

Speed: 0.14 sec/ 60 deg

Torque: 4.6 kg-cm

hi ...
how much torque do we need on the ailrons on a normal 2m pattern shipp . I have used the smal Fut. s 9650 on the elvator (2 piece) this servo gives 4.5 kg\cm at 6 v and 0.11 sec\60 deg ...and weight only 26 gr ...also a lovely smal servo!
does some think that this 0.3 kg can make any problems????
