Default Turtle Deck Foam Core Question

For Mike H and others supplying cores - are the turtle deck cores supplied as a solid piece, or with the second (inner) piece already removed? If they are solid, am I left to my own to cut out the inner piece that gets discarded?

Thanks,
Mark

If you solve this, and somehow end up with the spare inner bit, I'd love to know how much it weighs?
I tried to weigh one once, before cheap and accurate digital scales became available, and couldn't get a reading.

It's going to weigh squat in reality (1lb foam and all), but the hollowed out piece looks much better to my eye...

I'd second that, I remember spending hours honeycombing a wing years ago. I to could'nt get a reading... of course with todays super sensitive scales thay'll be able to record those missing grams but be a bit unlucky with one peice of wood for the sheeting and that advantage has gone. Makes me laugh that we spend extra attention keeping the out board section of the wing as light as possible and then, deep into the flight triming process... strap on lumps of lead to one or the other wing tips!

No, the wing's a different story---the weight of the glue's the thing there.
They definitely stop better with lighter tips.

Well, I had to check. I did some thumbnail calcs on a 45 size pattern plane I have drawn up and it looks like that one would be 1.25oz or so. So a full 2M size core might actually weigh a noticeable amount. I would definitely eliminate that core if it is 3oz or more of dead weight...

2.4 ozs on mine. That's more than the sheeted turtle deck weighs, or close to it.

That's substantial.

Thanks for the input, Mike.

That's definitely worth getting rid of. Now that you're in, do your cores come with the center piece cut loose? Then a bit of 3M77 or something to stick it in place while you sheet the outer piece and then you bust the inner piece loose before installing?

Yes, they come cored out.

No need to stick them in place. Just place the pieces upside down and apply weights to the core, shim the edges if necessary. Come back tomorrow and trim and sand....done.
