Default zdz40FAI

I just received my new FAI 40 --and next week will be running it on a bench test of various pipe setups and props - looking at various arrangements to use in a pattern model. The engine is light 2.5 lbs less prop driver and ignition so all up 2.75 lbs
The pipe will be carbon fibre - not sure which type . so I will be popping in updates on this as we go and on the setup once it is in the plane .

Dick,

I would like to know the results after you install the new engine. I help a friend to put together the same plane and engine combination. I would like to know the net weight reduction.

Regards,

Ahh, the old FART regs.
Every time I hear a gasser fly by, I think of these regs..

Can't wait to hear how quiet you can get the 40 F3A...

I had called it the FAI myself... and Mike and David wanted to make sure I called it by it's correct model name to prevent confusion...

40RE F3A

http://www.rcshowcase.com/html/ZDZ/zdz40f3a.html

It's a rockin' 40cc engine and I look forward to your tests DIck...

Confusion?
With what?
anyway - ------------
there are some interesting features - you also have one ?
along with weight change - a new igniton --a improved sparkplug setup - designed to let tapered plug fit directly into the head -
ventilation holes in the plug cap -- std is the 201 carb with mods Dooley came up with -
My other two 40's and my fifty all have this carb -it is excellent .
So I will be able to compare with three 40's locally and some fifties .
also a selection of pipes /props for power - muffling and various power band tunings .
I can't wait to get started (Tuesday) My Bling with the new 50 and carb silencer and even having an external pipe is very quiet on 22x10 turning 6900. In the air --the higher pitched prop allows LOWER rpm for same cruise speeds so the only real noise occurs when dipping into the power . even hovering -this is a better setup!!
This is why I am keen on concentrating more on the flatest power band -rather than the highest rpm setup. One pipe setup tried seems to be very good at this

Sorry Dick... I was just making sure somehow I didn't miss something... as RC Showcase's webmaster when I initially made the mistake of calling it the FAI on the website they wanted to make sure it was called and represented as the F3A...

Since you often share a lot of ZDZ info and test results... I figured maybe you made the same typo I did and thought it was worth mentioning.

I don't have one yet... that's why I'm so interested in your test results... being the lightest 40 out there by a decent amount (best I can tell) and lighter than most 25-35cc gassers, it sure does open up the possility for a lot of large fglow planes to efficiently be converted to gas.

I think it'll make a great solution for planes like the EF 74" Yak, and some narroe cowl designs like the Giant UCanDo3D...

I fergot about the webmeister thing -- but the ZDZ40 RE which I have been using and have had two of so far --is probably one of the most overlooked 40/50 cc engines on th market - the real problem being - once again- the choices in exhaust setups
Many users want an engine that fits on a flat firewall and then you bolt on or cut out things on top sides or bottom of cowl.
The 40RE is capable of fitting in a 3" wide cowl-and if the mounting lugs could be allowed to stick out - even narrower setup
a straight header or an S bend into a can or pipe and the entire setup is very tidy - A model such as a P51 or a Spit or a Firecracker racer etc.. would have nothing sticking out - It also allows for far better cooling flow over the engine than most others --the Pitts mufflers really are not the greatest for flow around the head .
But we all have compromises we are willing to make --

The 40RE is a nice motor but with almost another 1/2 lb taken of the F3A is even mroe attarctiev for those gas to gas conversions... I realize it's "intended" design was to fit in the comeptition F3A category... but it's benefits apply to my interests as well...

I know that B&B makes a rear pitts muffler for the 40 that isn't much (if any wider) than the head... Here some pics that BriBro shared of his GUCD3D setup with the "regular" 40RE...

Nice clean setup.... but maybe not the best... of course the rear port makes for easy and "skinny" tuned pipe use too.... your thoughts?

I tried the rear exhaust muffler available for the 40RE - -
My frank opinion was that it was quite loud and the performance was really clipped
Having said that --
This is typical of many in cowl "mufflers ", yet some modelers still prefer them as noise is not an issue with them and th power is enough to satisfy their particular setup .
The RE ,with a small JMB can and a very small, short header -is far superior -in my book- power is equal with open stack and noise is very low - here is one setup I used. On a 21x8 it ran close to 7000 rpm very low noise .

Would that have been the JMB 40/70/270? I agree they are quiet ... my 80 did real well on one and was so quiet that the glow engiens were droming me out and I kept wondring if I had flames out...

Still in some designs... like that GUCD3D that's not always an option... whne you say you tired the RE... that was the on RCS sells?

Hi Dick,

Looking forward to your results as my Comp-ARF Integral arrives in a couple of weeks and I'd really like to go for this engine in it.

Would be very interested to hear how much it shakes and knocks compared to the YS140/160s??

Thanks,
Mark

You may have to call them and tell them you have the 40RE engine....

I have flown a Giant UCD with the 40 RE and bennett muffler. Very loud muffler, no way you could pass a noise test with the bennett muffler. Like Dick said if noise isnt an issue its a cheap alternative.

Dick have you considered using 3 or 4 blade props ?

3 blade prop recomendations?
This engine is going into a GP hawk.... Yeah, should be some real nice large, round, loops!

If I remember correctly you go for one down on a 3 when compared to the recomended 2 props... Like a 20x10 whould be a 19x9 3-blade?
Anyone care to help?
