Does anyone know how many amps does it take to use on this starter, with the 12 volt battery I use it wont even budge my OS 160

I am using the same starter, no problems to start my OS140RX and my Webra 160, but I needed to upgrade the battery to a 20something Amps job (the shop told me it is the same battery that comes with the Honda CBR1000 motorbike) I was using a gel cell, but it didn´t have enough oomph...

That's why I got the Sullivan Dynatron starter. It works with my gell cell batt. One way or the other you spend the money to start the bigger engines.

The OS has a lot of drag in its bottom end, especially when dry and cold---it has a heavy crankshaft and a wider-than-usual rear bearing cf other 140-160 2-strokes.
If you give it a good big manual prime straight into the open carb throat, and flick it over by hand a few times, before applying the starter for the first time on the day, it might free up enough for the starter to whirr it satisfactorily.

I like these big engines, since you don't need a starter anymore....Just prime it right, flip it with either a chickenstick or with a thick glove (that's what I use), and it always runs. I hate using a starter.....only use it for four-strokes. Just my thoughts....

Never, ever, use a starter, even on a new engine. Before you start the engine the first time for a day of flying, AND BEFORE YOU CONNECT THE GLOW PLUG CLIP, open the throttle fully, choke the engine with your finger over the carb for three pull thrus. Fuel WILL dump out on the ground, so have a rag handy. Now close the throttle to your normal low throttle flying setting, attach the glow plug clip, and flip the prop backwards. Will usually start in 1 to 3 back flips. After the initial run of the day, start it at low throttle, backflipping once, and it will almost always start on the first flip

and: Idle mixture adjustment. Screw the idle mixture screw IN (lean) 2 FULL turns from the factory setting, in addition to the main needle 1 1/4 turns from closed. This willl get you very close to the optimum setup.

I took this from http://www.rcaerobats.net/OS160_Setup.htm

Seems like you really have to lean the engine on idle from the factory setup to get it running right; Then, for that first flight of the day it has to start wet, then after you can prime normally. I always prime, but then I don't have a Perry on my 160.

I do take care after priming it like that; sometimes you don't even need to flip the propellor, just touching it already makes it start...watch the meat grinder!!!
