Default Tank set-up??

Hello,

How do you guys do the set-up's inside your fuel tanks for your Pattern birds??
I've got a 20 oz. Dubro for my PH.D Jeckyl and I'm not sure to use the standard fuel line clunk set-up or to use the aluminum tube set-up, so the clunk stays in the back of the tank.
What do you guys prefer???

Thanks,
Phil

Phil,

It's your choice, however, since the ends of the clunks I use are slotted and beveled 45 degrees, I prefer the aluminum tube method. This method provides greater rigidity and points the clunk at roughly 30 - 45 degrees from the stopper vs a clunk affixed to roughly 5 inches of flexible fuel tubing, that may tend to lie sideways on the bottom of a large fuel tank. The aluminum tube method, if properly constructed, should provide you with maximum quantity of available fuel in the tank.

Thanks Steve!!

I forgot to mention, I'm going to be installing the foam clunk that YS recommends for their 140DZ. This is the first time using a foam clunk and a YS engine, so that's why I have all the questions.
Would you still recommend the same tank set-up??

Thanks,
Phil

Phil,

In addition to the preferred aluminum tube method, I recommend a Tettra seamless "crank-tank" over the Dubro. Call it a cheap security blanket. I don't have any experience with the Y.S. Dingo's and whether they pump as much tank splitting pressure as the non-injected 140's.

The Dubro tank should be fine as long as you're running a DZ. All YS DZ engines use a true fuel pump rather than the pressurized tank/regulator setup. Also I would be careful about making that clunk too rigid to the back of the tank, it should be free to flop around a little. The DZ requires constant fuel flow in order to keep running. The foam on the YS clunk helps with that, but if the clunk loses contact with the fuel for too long you can end up running your engine extremely lean for a second, potentially causing damage to it. This is the "burp" that DZ owners always talk about at the end of a tank. You should always avoid running your DZ dry, because it will make it more difficult to restart because the pump must be re-primed, and it could cause internal damage. I personally am using a 20 oz Tettra tank, and I have the YS clunk on silicone fuel tubing that runs probably 2/3 to 3/4 the length of the tank. I run my 1.40 DZ with no problems whatsoever in regards to fuel flow and I can fly until the tank is almost dry before I get a "burp".

Sorry to hijack your thread, but since we are talking about tanks, I would like to ask the experts about the Tettra bubbless tank. Am new to the game and bought one of these tanks, which comes with a bladder. i know that some guys use it with the bladder and some don't - what is the reason. I am running an OS140RX.

Thanks
Roly
