Default What is TOC

I keep hearing about TOC planes etc.

I assume that stands for Tournament of Champions?

What exactly is TOC? Is it for pattern flying only, or is it for IMAC too?

Is it international? Can someone please shed some light?

Thanks,

Matt

The Tournament of Champions started out with pattern planes, then switched to scale planes. It used to have the 10 top US pilots and 10 international pilots. It hasn't been around for a few years now. It really helped the giant scale aerobatic planes take off.

TOC now is just a brand name for larger scale airplanes. They are using the TOC name, but unfortunately the Tournament of Champions has been gone for a few years when Bill Bennett died.

TOC planes is also a generic term for Giant Scale Aerobatic planes, mainly 150cc class planes.

The TOC was in fact the ultimate international event of yesteryear. If you want the all out, grit in your teeth, everything you wanted to know to experience it first hand account, read away...

And that was a cool story Don!

So the TOC was to IMAC like the F3A is to Pattern Flying? Kinda sorta?

Somewhat.

The TOC wasn't governed by IMAC rules, it was its own entity.

Sorry Tony.. but I find calling anything a "TOC plane" that didn't actually compete in the TOC to be disingenuous and disrespectful of what Bill Bennett gave us hobbyists. There are some things in this hobby that should be sacred.. and the TOC is absolutely one of them.

Cheers,

Man I remember that year clearly.. So many strange things happened that go-around. It was an event that most people never truly understood, both in the scope of effort Mr. Bennett and his people like Steve Rojecki undertook to make it happen, nor in the amount of work it took for the pilots and their teams to get ready to fly in.. Even people who attended and watched really never had a clue just what kind of effort it all took to make happen.

Spending weeks in the desert, flying, cleaning, fueling, occasionally (hopefully rarely) repairing, rinse and repeat.. just to head up to the TOC Field for those few magical days of the contest. It was hell, but we loved every single minute of it. It took a solid month afterwards to even want to look at an airplane again.. and I didn't even fly in the contest!

People forget just how much we owe Mr. Bennett sometimes.. I think we owe it to him that we don't let people forget.
