Default Prop choice for a Pletty. What's the background?

Hi Again All -

I realize there are other slightly contentious discussions ongoing with regards to props but being a new kid on the block, I was hoping a pro or two could offer some of their experience as to why the users of E power and Pletty motors in particular favor the range 20x14(15) to 21x14?

As I mentioned in an Integral post I feel that my power setup (TP Pro Lite V2 10s, Hacker Master Spin 90, Pletty 30-10) has way more power than needed. I have my throttle curve cut back to 85% and it's my understanding thats the way several others run their Pletty throttle curves.

I'd love to downsize my prop to a 19x12 to increase the practice time, but would my downlines become to speedy or my level flight to slow even for Intermediate? What other props have been tried on the Pletty?

I realize this is a big and subjective discussion, and my real goal is simply to increase my practice times by reducing my power usage if possible, but in the end I want to do what's "right" or "best" I know the 20.5x14 is accepted as the "best". I'm just wondering what experiences went into making that choice.

Thanks as always to anyone that takes the time to enlighten the new guy

In general the two most common APC props are the 20.5x14, and 21x14. However its really personal choice, some props like the 20x15 give lots of speed, 22x12 lots of pull but less speed, etc. etc. A lot has to depend on the sequence you fly, how you like to fly and so on and so forth. Each person has a different feel

There are also other props, PT carbon props, RASA single blade (20x15, 21x13) and RASA folding blades, Xoar makes some wood props for F3A electric.

I think you will find that the 21x14 is the common choice because it offers a good combination of pull, speed and does it quite efficiently. Its not by chance that this particular size of prop has become the most popular

Hope that helps somewhat.

Chad is correct,........I run the 21x14 APC on my Pletty and it works very well in all conditions. If I am flying in really windy conditions I will change back to the 20.5x14 as I think it adds the extra punch needed for windy conditions and it pulls about the same Mah as the 21x14 would. I just tried the RASA 20x15 as an experiment,...really fast,.....use way less throttle as it carries more speed at a lower stick position. Also with the 20x15, if you have not gotten use to the EP power you can really put a hurt'en on your packs, if you hammer the throttle throughout the sequence (not practical but useable).

Also,...a thing to remember is guys like Chad, Dave L, Jason and lots of others "others" have done lots of experimental research over the years with different motors, props, batteries, etc to help get EP where it is today. Asking questions is the correct thing to do,....I did and still do, as EP is still new to me aswell.
