Default Tailwheels?

Looking for your suggestions on tailwheel setups. Obviously, lightness and durability are the main variables along with cost.
I have used the standard stuff like Sullivan and NMP along with some of the GP stuff for ARFs from Tower for$1.89. I see the MKD
at Central. Is it worth the bucks?

Your suggestions please..

Thanks Much,
RC

Rick,

I really like the MK ones from Central. I know guys that use the .40 size ones from Dubro as well and they work great also.

I use the Dubro and love them. Cheaper than the MK and just as functional.

Extreme flight has a Micro tail wheel setup. If I remember right Cameron Smith had the same assembly on his vanquish in huntsville

Just a wild thought...would a skid work? I have several smaller planes that steer fine on the ground with a skid. We don't taxi out, or taxi back, and we're up to rudder-effective speed pretty quickly...

Scott,

The only problem with a skid is off asphalt. That noise would make it REALLY hard to score well, regardless of whether it is a judging criteria. Also, if you are out flying by yourself it is easier to taxi out and taxi back.

I second the MK tailwheel.

The Du-Bro .40 sized setup is about the lightest you can get, but I like the durability way better of the MK, and I'll take the 1 gram penalty.

Shameless self promotion of the Delro tailwheel assembly. Several dollars cheaper than the MK.

Chris that's too heavy excepting the wheel. MK is too expensive and heavy. Eliminate the brackets and you've got something. Only thing it needs is a very small tiller and Chris' wheel. A plastic tube produces plenty of steering authority, installed on the stubby tiller, of course. Anything more than 5 grams is too heavy

how about free. Hey Rick since I consider you a friend and fellow competitor I can make you a tail weel set up. My neighbor has a spare tire for a 62 Buick and I could weld you up a bracket if you send me your dimensions. Please keep in mind that the fact we will be competing against one another this year has nothing to do with me offering to do this for you. If you decide to go another route I would recommend the MK. Jim,

Since Rick is flying the OS 1.60, I don't know if he has enough power to carry the MK tailwheel setup, much less your idea

Be nice Arch. At least he gave up on the Webra.

I thought Rick was going to be flying a Webra this year. He was telling me about all the extra power he would have so I thought a little extra weight wouldn't matter.

Webra, electric, gasser, flux capacitor.....he says he'll fly anything except a YS. Must be allergic to power.

I am allergic to all yourB@#$%^! LOL . I may need the 62 Buick option to counter a YS weight problem though. All options are on the table.

Your OS 1.60 should counter any YS weight issues. That thing weighs the same as a 62 Buick.

Is that a Buick with 3 or 4 wheels? Jim Grunt just went to the pokey for stealing a wheel off a 62 Buick! Was that your car Arch?

RC,

A picture of the Buick tailwheel.

Classic Pattern Flying, Orion June 1960, slightly modificated by me.
The original designer, Ed Kazmirski, did have another idea, see the picture.
Of course the mains are also heavy duty, but retractable.

Tailwheel? What's a tailwheel?

I just use a skid made from a rubber triangle and PVC skid - It works great on grass!

A horse also "works" great on grass but we prefer wheels to drive.

I posted Jim's bail. Paid for it by selling my fertilizer.

Now about your weight problem. An engine that makes marginal power, isn't particualrly light and you're worried about tail wheel weight.....wait until I see you again.

BTW - Your Webra still hasn't sold. If it were a YS it would be gone by now.

OK... OK... I give up! If you give me a new YS170 w/CDI and a years worth of fuel, I'll give it a try. Oh yeah... and a 30' spool of fuel tubing for the plumbing. and then there's a back up motor and the one in the shop.

I'll even throw in a slightly used Webra 160ARR for good measure!

And as far as a weight problem, let the skinny one throw the first stone!!! Go ahead CHUBBY... THROW!!!

Who you calling chubby. Thin eluded you many years ago. As for the donations if anybody wants to give me a hacker in rudder with six battery packs to try I will not decline. As for the YS why would you want to get that icky stuff all over your hands.
P. S. A pattern flight is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get.
