Hi Guys,
I just got the 90 size from my local guy. How about some help with engine options--I have an as new YS 91 FZ, NIB Webra 120 side exhaust (no pump), a NIB old OS 90 FSR, and a Thunder Tiger 1.20 rear exhaust w/pump. What do you think? Not sure the Thunder tiger rear exhaust w/pipe is practical for this plane. I intend using the plane for AMA pattern practice. Any comments? |

Hey Jim,
The rear exhaust would require some surgery to the fuselage , probably more trouble than it would be worth and since I'm not an OS fan that one would be eliminated if it was me. Eddie had a YS 91 in his originally and I understand it flew really well. The 1.20 Webra would probably be good also as there is plenty of room in the engine compartment and I like Webra engines and I also like plenty of power which the Webra has . Jim, with any luck I'll get a flight or two in tomorrow (finally) after a couple weeks' waiting. I've set the control throws to what I have found are good "pattern throws" for my preferences. Elevator at +/- 14 degrees, ailerons at 15 deg. Those sound pretty fast, but the Excelleron doesn't appear to be very "long" so they may be fine.
Others have reported the manual to be far too sensitive...and I don't want it that way, either. So I'll report my opinions, soon as I have one! |

Pattern flyer
The instruction that came with my Explorer -the beta version of the Excelleron called for 10mm up & down on aileron and elevator and 20mm r & L on Rudder. Bob I got 2 flights in yesterday. Ist 2 since the accident. All went well but I was a little nervous. Hope you get to fly your tomorrow (oops today:D ) Eddie |

Finally flew today. Four flights, feeling things out. First, the 90 two-stroke will HAVE to be on a pipe. Right now, on 10%, it's not "Advanced" class capability - needs mor UP-ness. So that will have to be sorted out. Second - flight performance is outstanding, although the control setups I have are NOT sensitive. Maybe a matter of taste, but the 15 degrees on elev and ailerons is almost just about right to me. VERY nice, stable airplane, straight and solid. Snaps just beautifully, and spins like it's a real plane. VERY, very nice.
Third - CG - I have mine at 7" and that is WAY too nose heavy, as it takes a BUNCH of down elevator to hold level inverted, and lots more for inverted snaps. I'm thinking 7 1/4", maybe more aft will be needed. But even through the balance issue, this is an airplane that really does handle like a "big one". I am not disappointed at all, and when I sort out the CG and get some more punch, it will be Masters' capable, and that's no bull. This is a really good airplane, guys. |

I knew you would like it. I was wondering about the .90 because this is a really big .90 size ship. I think it can handle a 1.20 or maybe even a 1.40 very easily. The YS 1.10 I'm using pulls it very good but Dave Shadel says the new 1.10s have about the same power as the old 1.20s . Maybe one of your old ST-2300s would be just what the doctor ordered. I saw your Arresti at Temple and it is an outstanding airplane but this is a heck of a practice, backup, and just fun airplane to fly. Good flying tommy s |

Thanks for the report--especially concerning the 90 two stroke power, or lack of. Maybe either the Webra 1.20 or the T.T. 120 rear exhaust with low pitch props? |

Yeah, Jim. That would probably be good. I'm really considering an ST 2300, not so much for the beaucoup power, but the cost! Right now, $10 Gift Cert., and $15.00 off from Tower's $149.99. Makes it nearly impossible for me to justify some other choice!

I like where you're going with the ST 2300 idea; using the standard muffler, it would swing an 18x8 or 17x10 @ 8,000 rpm on straight FAI fuel. The 18x8 would provide you with 8% more speed and double the thrust of your current 90 two-stroke setup for a 10oz (283.5g) weight penlty. If wing loading presented an issue, you could save 10oz of weight over the standard build using carbon fiber parts. __________ Schpankme |

Yep. Already have the longer CF gear/pants from another project, and the ST only increases wing loading on this airplane by 1.3 oz/sq.ft. With the huge increase in power loading, I think it will be a "fun fly" kind of power available, and using flatter pitch props can keep the overall airspeed down, while enjoying pretty much unlimited vertical, I figure.
Of course, the battery will have to be at the stab to get her balanced, but what the heck? It's a "fun plane".... that COULD be a serious pattern bird, though. It is surprisingly neutral and very well behaved. |

Well got one test flight. As usual something came lose during flight. This time the perry carb on the front of my OS91 lost both screws. For some reason is ran great until I throttle back for the first landing. Then it is was dead stick and too far from the runway. A little ding on the leading edge and another reminder to make a shorter first flight, land and check to see if everything is still tight.
Anyway, got about 10 mintues; but as soon as the model broke ground you could tell it is a keeper. Flies straight for no coupling noticed yet. CG at 7.25 inches and it seems perfect to me. I must have come out more tail heavy than yours, as I have to put the battery at the firewall to get the CG this far forward. So I could easily put a heavier engine up front and shift the battery back. Put it seems to have nearly unlimited vertical on the APC13X8 and a half and half mix of cool power 15% and Magnum YS blend. I run a perry carb, until it tried to depart the engine. Just the fuel tubing and throttle clevis holding the carb in place when I got the plan back. Randy |

Well guys I have 2 Explorer90's and 1 Excelleron90 and picked up the 50 again, after seeing the first Excelleron 50 fly, I had to get it while it was on sale.

Just ordered an Excelleron 90........Thanks for the heads up on the sale Tommy. It was a toss up between the Infinity 90, Leo 90, and the Excell 90. I did not like the outline of the fin/rudder on the Infinity(or the price tag). The Leo is an awesome looking prospect, except they put the wing and stab about 2 inches to close together. For $160 to $200 dollars less, the Excell 90 looks like a 2 meter, and flies like a 2 meter......Sold. Jeff B

Back to the ST2300 ?
I know you did not have good luck with the ignition version -but 5% nitro n alky on an ignition one sure worked for me . The 9000 rpm on 18x8 was awful hard to ignore - A stockengine n muffler setup we did back then (first version single outlet) was down in 7000 range but quiet and smooth and totally easy to use . we set it up for a local friend and he still flys it . |

Dick - the whole idea of going with the ST2300 on this is simple ECONOMY. There just is NOT a more cost effective, powerful, reliable powerplant for this kind of a/c out there. I'll probably turn a 17 x 6 or 17 x7, unless it proves to be just too big a disc. At any rate, with the KS canister under the wing, and a Mueller header, the balance won't be too tricky,
I'll run 15%, and sure I'll be putting around at 1/2 throttle or less for sequence work, so fuel economy won't be an issue at all. I'll put pics and a report when I get her all done. |

What engine mount do you plan on using with the ST-2300 ? The only thing I don't care for on the Excelleron is the Vibra-Damp type engine mount. It seems to be working OK and the plane flies great but it sure lets the engine move around a lot. Now that I have one flying good , I've been thinking about modifying the nose on the new one to accomodate a Hyde type A mount. I already have the mount so there is no added expense involved just some extra work. What do you think ? tommy s |
