Oh, forgot to mention that I mounted my throttle servo up under the leading edge of the wing.

... how have you been able to keep the trim on the plane? I was thinking of using a clear dope spray.
I've had continuing problems mainly with the blue trim (See post Post #322 on page 13). I gave up on trying to iron them down and now I just peel them off when they start to lift and throw them away.
It appears that the blue stripes may have been glued on because they leave a gritty blue residue on the wing when they peel off (See picture in Post #326 on page 14).

I would also like to know if you have done any reinforceing of either the firewall, or any other place on the plane.
I pinned the fire wall with 1/8th dowels and JB-Weld. I didn't make any other modifications.

RE: NEW QUEST

Well I finally finished my Quest II that I purchased last December. I am retired and have learned to do very little very slowly. After reading this thread I have re-ironed all the blue trim, but over-all the covering seams to be applied very well, only time will tell. The CG is at 7.75 inches from the leading edge at the root (no extra weight added). From the info presented here this should be a good starting point.

The engine is a Tiger Shark 120 that is rotated so the muffler is in the center between the landing gear.

I am trying to download some pictures. Wish me luck!

On my first Quest I applied a coat of Dope clear aeroseal on the trim. It did help a lot but not entirely. I am still searching for something that works better.

To post pictures, don't use "Fast Reply", instead pick the "Post Reply" button just under the Page << ... bar. Then type your message and pick "upload files and images" under the message window. Pick "browse" and select your file. My Quest is slowly turning all white but is a nice flyer!

RE: NEW QUEST

Oldbob,
It will fly great and you'll love it.
If it were me...:)
I'd remove that blue strip of covering on the top of the wing that runs nearly from tip to root.
You can replace it with blue monokote and be a very close match.
You WILL have covering trouble.
That blue strip was the only one that really endangered the plane so be careful.
In my experience your 7.75" CG is safe.
I would use the recommended throws for the test flight...15 degree for elevator and ailerons.
I fly pattern contests with mine and with my CG I am flying 10 degrees elevator. I am also flying with about 15% expo on ailerons and elevator...just enough to offset the "anti-expo" of the control linkage.
Rudder I am using 85% expo. That way I can just lean on the rudder for subtle heading corrections, have gentle control for takeoffs and landings but then have full throw available for stall turns and don't have to worry about getting caught in the wrong rate switch.
Mine has a Hyde mount with YS 1.10. The plane now has 100 flights on it and is holding up very, very well. I believe the Hyde mount has a lot to do with this. No cracks, no screws losening, no linkages developing slack...I'm sold on them!
Good Luck!
JLK

RE: NEW QUEST

Has anyone tried placing clear 3M 2 inch packaging tape on the blue extending on to the white ( towards the leading edge )? With the muffler under the cowling I would think fuel related issues should not be a problem. My Quest G2 is still in the box waiting its turn to be built, hopefully before Christmas! I have a YS110 to install upfront.

If no one has tried clear tape, I may try it just to see what happens.

RE: NEW QUEST

Clear packing tape has been used and is almost undetectable. I have a tuning question of my YS110, after the demise of my first quest I had to replace the needle valve assembly. I just flew it for t he first time the other day, all the settings are the same except for the needle valve which is out 2 turns. The engine is running great 9200 with a 14X10 prop but is consuming 13 oz in about 6 min. Seems a lot to me, besides the obvious of leaning it out with the HS needle would turning the regulator screw in a little reduce the consumption?

Oldbob,

Are you anywhere near Dallas?....there is a pattern contest there on the 23-24th....you should go.

RE: NEW QUEST

Mark, thanks for the invite. Dallas is about a three-hour drive for me. If I do go I can only be there on Saturday. Sunday our granddaughter, who plays volleyball for University of Southern Mississippi will be playing at Southern Methodist and I can’t go to Dallas and not see my granddaughter play. Besides I wont have enough time to dial-in the new Quest so I will probably fly my Javelin in Sportsman just for the one day.

Hope to see you there.

Quite a few (including me) will be there on Friday to practice.

RE: NEW QUEST

First, thanks for posting this information. When I built my Quest I referred to your earlier build thread a number of times.

Hey everyone,

I know this is a really old thread, but I just won this ARF at a fun fly but it didn't have any instructions at all. I looked at everything and can figure it out for the most part but instructions would be a big help. I noticed on the first page of this thread someone used Eric's build thread for the Quest. Could anyone point me to where that thread is?I couldn't seem to find it through multiple RCUniverse and Google searches.

Thanks!

I would need a few days to "relocate" mine. Seems I copied it to a PDF for save keeping. I have Friday off and will see if I can locate it.

This plane was ahead of its time. I crushed mine G1 version in summer of 2008 when I lost receiver battery. The damage wasn’t that bad, cowl took the brunt of it. It is finally back flying. I’ve replaced Saito 120 with DLE 20 RE. Engine fits perfectly into the cowl and it has all the power that this plane would ever need. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=2165622

I still fly jetmech43's from the meat of this thread. It is ratty, fuel soaked, grungy, packing tape covered mess. It still flies great. YS110. it is going to die because it is getting too fuel soaked to keep repairing without major surgery. Too many snaps and it breaks the firewall off. Covering is the worst stuff ever.

jetmech43 06-07-2016 03:24 PM

That thing is getting older than dirt Tom

TFF 06-07-2016 06:30 PM

Actually it has turned to dirt, but it will not die. It looks like it is 11 years old.
