Actually my situation has changed, so I will be posting the up-to-glass section. maybe I can twist Dean's arm and get him to post the paint proceedure afterwards? I know Dean is doing some really trick stuff, but he's spraying so if he could just get the pics I can do the rest.....

go ahead twist my arm... : )

as soon as it warms up a little here, it's hard to get the paint to stick when its 20° outside...

Consider it twisted!!!

ok then, I'll post the proceedures through glass, then we'll pick up with yours.....

Mike,

To do the rudder mod do I need a new core or could I just extend it with a balsa block since I am going to run a YS in the nose? The tail weight from the balsa block would help offset that.

MHester 01-31-2007 07:38 PM

RE: Black Magic v2 builder's thread! *Updated*

You can just use a balsa block and extend the bottom rear 1/2" back and down....the weight is miniscule.

My current Black Magic model. I should be finished with it in a couple of weeks. Then I will start building a another one for electric. I should of had it done several months ago but I am a slow builder and an even slower painter.

that is one sweet looking paint job.

Mike i am running a mac header on my 140rx 7/8 diameter. Any preference on the length of the es pipe? in the 2006 catalog central has listed a 20 inch and a 24 inch long pipe. in the 2007 catalog they list a 20 inch and a 22 inch. Any preference? with my 140rx on a os header which was 3/4 inch i used the 19 1/2 inch long pipe.

Just sign me dazed and confused. At least i still have my looks.

Fuselage is looking nice i am now to the point where i have to install the DEPS. And hoping i can get a pipe on order so i can cut the pipe clearance.

Thanks
Dennis

Ok, here ya go....the V2.2 mods.

I do have the cores, and will sell them at dead cost. Foam, box, packing and shipping....$50, Paypal only for this one.

You can easily do it yourself. But the belly core is bigger, and the rudder/fin core makes it cleaner with a thicker TE.

This update is optional, and provided as a service to existing customers. Thank you for everything!

Looks great Tony! More when ya get it done!

Dennis, I always use the 2C140M8 pipe on all of my OS engines. header at stock length. What this amounts to on the plane is that you have to extend thepipe tunnel about 6-61/2" past the end of the belly pan. It's easy, just floor it there, make a cut with a razor saw, sand with a block and install vertical grain 3/23" or 1/8" balsa. On the back face, angle it out and won, not dead flat.

Wendell.....yes, tons of maintenance. I'll get to that when I have a minute.....

Nice detail on the pipe tunnel. I decided to go with the L9 pipe. Seeing as the Mac header is 7/8". Of course would'nt you know Central is out of stock on them. It may not be ready to fly until summer anyway. So no big deal. Ordered some wrong Carbon fiber from CST. I may just send it to you and you can see if you can use it for anything. Figure i owe it to you for all the help.

So how's my T-shirt idea coming along. I thought it was a good idea. Yet some people think i'm out in left field.

Well the Black Magic gasser is finished. Final wieght 10lbs 14 oz another 3 oz can be saved by changing battery types li ion to li poly. Planning on a maiden flight tomorrow and will post some pics.

First flight was great, need to dial in the cg and throws. Engine ran great I would say almost equivalent to the OS 1.40 and after breakin and tuning will be as good. Not a DZ 1.60. But for me flying sportsman plenty of power. I have an Impact with an Os 1.40 and cannot tell any difference in power. Smooth is the word the engine runs very smoothly and I thinks vibrates less than the 1.40. These are my observations. The plane was flown by others who had positive comments. You can fly 15 minutes on less than 12 oz of fuel just one of the benefits and fuel is alot cheaper.

Your Gasser Black Magic looks very nice. Please more details about your setup.

My oldest, original Insight design has ended up as a bang around sport flyer outfitted with a G26. I got to fly it for a few minutes and it does the sportsman just fine (weighs 12 lbs.). It was a hoot to see the transmitter get passed around for more than 15 minutes....on one tank of fuel! The new owner will likely never fly a competition round, but he sure does have a new respect for pattern planes now.

Pretty simple. Black Magic with the fuselage not being glassed and painted however just covered. The tuned pipe area is glassed for protection. The engine is a MVVS 26 petrol with a Karl Mueller header, ES composite tuned pipe and Hyde mount (type A). I am currently using li ion batteries for rec and ignition but will change out to li poly for an addtional 3 oz weght savings. I am also using fiberglass landing gear but am changing that out to carbon ES gear to save another 2-3 oz. Fuel tank size is a 12 oz tank will get you in excess of 15 minutes of flying time. I am using the PT models 18-8 carbon prop which seems to give consistant speed and good vertical. The plane should be around 10 lbs 8 oz by weeks end.

Looks fantastic Jon! it really came out nice.

All of this is pretty exciting for me, a LOT of Black Magics are being finished up right now and I'm starting to get some pics. I love seeing the plane in different color schemes with that personal touch. When they're all done and finalized with graphics etc, you guys take some pics with your planes so I can put them up on my site gallery will ya?

All the best guys, I hope you have great seasons with those new planes!

Beautiful work guys! I've seen a few of the ones Mike built and he is indeed a master craftsman. Wish I could build half that good.

Thanks for the compliment Dave!

I talked with dan about the gas V2 today, wow! I haven't seen it fly but hope to soon. he seems pretty confident that it will be flying at a weight of 10 lbs 6 ozs or so. That's pretty decent for a plane of this size. He says it doesn't really have the performace for the top levels, but I'd like to let him break it in and see where the "line" actually is.

Couple hundred bucks for a plane, couple hundred for an engine and servos, and 12 ounces of gasoline for a decent practice flight......hmmm.....well, I can see some definite possibilities for those wanting to get into pattern with a good plane but are complaining about the cost.

BTW, I am almost done with the plugs for the new plane. I may take a picture of it all put together....man it's sexy!!! Very shark-like.

Well guys this is the first of two Black Magics that I'll be painting in the next couple of weeks (weather permitting). I just couldn't resist to post some before pics. This one is totally glassed and ready to prime. I liked to paint stands that I saw on the last page and made a few slights mods of my own. I didn't see the point of making two more stands when I could just use the ones I made for the lasers and just cover up the lazers when I'm shooting paint. I'll keep you guys posted on the finishing so wishme luck.... it'll be m first time painting!!

Thanks for the compliment Dave!

More of an observation than a compilment Mike, but you're welcome anyway. (Just kidding)
