Old Pattern ships

Hello,
You guys are right about finding nice old kits on Ebay, I did not know exatly where to look for them though. Anyone ever build a Joy Products Cutlass Supreme or a J&J Banshee ?The same guy has them both listed up there. Would these be legal for the SPA ?I got a great Sweatater from him about a year ago, and boy does it fly nice.

What do you want? A pattern plane or pylon racer? I don't think my Hanno could be squeezed into this little plane..... it only has 55" wings. It is designed for something like my O S .32 SX, a Webra .32, TT .36 pro or one of the new crop of .50 4 strokes. A .46 size 2 stroke would be on the large size but would be better.

re: Hirobo Stream 50 ARF

I was hoping that since it takes the ys 63 it could take the Hanno.
...all in the name of speed and fun. I already have a pattern plane (see earlier post). I may put the Hanno in it and put the RF in this. Is the ys 63 w tuned pipe lighter?

The current trend seems to be to put 1.60 2 strokes in 72" planes.

Per site:
"The model can also accept either standard exhaust systems or the "tune pipe down the center of the fuselage"

Just looking at Morris Hobbies web page. They carry MVVS 2 strokes. Most are convertable to rear or side exhaust. This could be a plus for someone looking at a rear exhaust pattern plane and a new engine.

There is also Jett Engineering and Novarossi (see link) for rear exhaust motors. The folks at Jett tell me thier motors are designed for speed not slow pattern.....just the ticket for Ballistic Pattern. Here is the Novarossi -

The Novarossi looks as sexy as an engine could look. Would like to hear from someone with one of these motors. I think the Supertiger rear exhaust is still available also.

The Senior Pattern Association flies planes and maneuvers from before January 1, 1976. No retracts, no pipes. The original concept was to keep things simple and cheap (no retracts, no pipes). We fly patterns with only center maneuvers. Last year, we flew eight contests in the southeast averaging about 30 pilots. There were also several SPA type events in other areas of the country. The competition is a bit more low key than regular pattern, and the planes considerably less sophisticated. I started flying SPA just to get more time in front of judges. Most of the guys I fly against will tell you I've improved because of it. I hardly ever invent maneuvers during a contest anymore.

This has really got me thinking about giving the retro trip ago.
I too started flying in the early 70S and was in awe of the guys flying pattern on the pipe.
Hell why not...but guys get with the program... modern engines should be a down grade...well at least using trad' engines should give you a points hike. I flew recently with a buddy and a 70inch pattern aeroplane powered by the .61/pipe Hanno special.
Holy smokers it wasn't lacking power.
When I was a kid it was the old Webra Speed .61 Owned one and loved it... If I get on this jive it's gotta be that engine... in a Mike Birch Capricorn.... Not to shabby.

I just snagged a NIB Rossi 61 FIRE (the good one with the 2 piece case..I have the 2 piece and 1 piece case versions, and I like the 2 piece better) for $103 off *Bay. These are the Rossis that everybody remebers when the say "back when they used screaming Rossi's on pipes". Maybe not SPA material, but surely great for Ballistic Pattern! LOL

Flyboy Dave 12-04-2002 06:03 PM

Yo, ChuckAuger....

Wazzup with those .61 FIRE Novarossi engines ?
Their like $239. with pipe....any good ?

I have no idea..they sure look good, and NovaRossi has a good reputation, but I've never seen one.

Latest project -

Super Curare delux kit - NIB
B&D Air retracts - NIP
OS soft mount
OS 61 Hanno II pumped rear exhaust with red anodized Hanno Pipe and 2 headers (all new).

All gathered thanks to religiously monitoring RC Universe over the past year. Total cost $450 (including individual shipping charges). I'm a kid again. Almost afraid to put it all together due to collectability of it all. Nah. Got work to do.....

90's era pattern kits still available

FWIW, there is a website that still sells many of the old R/C City line of kits, using updated composite materials:
RCME

Hope this helps someone looking for one of the older pattern rockets.

BPA sounds good to me. :)

I too have looked at the SPA but wasn't interested for a couple of reasons. First, couldn't find anyone in the area that was doing anything with SPA and second, I am a fan of the 75-85 vintage pattern planes. I have a NIB Dash 5 and YS 60 FIRE ready to get into the building cue. I am like others on the thread, I just like the old 75-85 pattern planes. Started flying pattern in the late 70's (in central and southern CA.) with a Kaos and a K&B 60. Really liked it. THen I moved up to T2A, Tipo (loved the plane with a OS 61 with an OS 1.08 FSR carb), Phoenix 8 Challenge 4 and a few others. I was never that great but I sure enjoyed the way the planes flew. TO this day I still like to fly "Ppattern" type planes over the 3D type of stuff. The friends of mine that got me into pattern were flying the Dash 5 with the YS 60 and I liked the combo so much that I found the a Dash 5 (NIB) in Denver back in the early 90's. I have the YS 60 (bought from one of the guys that taught me to fly pattern) that has been in the box since 1985. They are still in the box waiting! :( I sure wish the SPA would take a look at being more inclusive for the 75-85 vintage stuff. I too would like to compete in the SPA environment just cause it seems to be a little less pressure.

The closest thing you'll find to the days of old pattern days really cheap, is the Airborne models Intruder $165 bucks ARF. Now thats hard to beat. I flew the SPA last year with one and had a good time, however the daddy rabbit with its larger wing has a little advantage.
Once you get yourself trimmed for the gear down all the time its nothing to it because you know nothing different. My Killer Kaos with the OS 91 is so strong it can be hand launched, so power without the pipe ain't all bad. Mike give the SPA a try, leave the retracts down and put a performance specialities muffler on and your ready to go.

I don't know if any of you have heard of a slingshot but they make them here in australia. they are EXTREMELY fast eith the os 61's. I know someone who owns one and it takes up the whole field to land.

ballistic pattern plane for 45 RE engine?

I have a new ST X45 RE just itching to get out of the box. Thought about putting it on a racer, but a ballistic pattern plane sounds much more fun. Any ideas???

Also, where might I be able to get an extended header for the X45? The one I've got is less than an inch long (so to speak). Bolt spacing is 23mm.

Thanks,
Beau
