RE: Groovy 50 or venus 40?
Hey Wagen.
I finally got fed up with the Evolution and bought the OS 1.20 AX. What a difference. I put that engine on the Excelleron 90, inverted and all, worked with Ron Lockhart (you may know him). Anyway, we started the engine, started right up after only a few turns with the electric starter, adjusted mixture to very rich, ran about three or four tanks on the ground, leaned it up a tad (still rich), put the cowl back on, started it up, and flew. Not once did that engine act up, quit, anything. Performed just great. That was my reasoning for getting one for the Venus II. Good choice, in my opinion. I am now building a Goldberg Tiger 120 and have a new engine (OS 1.20 AX) for that too. The Tiger 120 is for pleasure and fun-relaxing day flyer. Glad you remembered my dilemma!!! The Evolution 100 is at the LHS on consignment.. ha.. DS. |
RE: Groovy 50 or venus 40?
Hi again, Wagen.
As far as the installation of the OS 1.20 AX in the Excelleron, well, it went in pretty much where the Evolution 100 was. Practically no difference. As for installing it in the Venus II, which is a 90 size plane, the only big deal was setting the engine in place then getting the cowl to fit properly, which would be the same thing no matter what engine I used. On the Venus however, I opted to install the engine on an angle, about 60 degrees down. This puts the muffler in that area on the bottom of the Venus II that, I think, was put there for the muffler to go into. Bonus for this is that I can actually see where the glow driver goes..ha.. and that it isn't exactly inverted, there is very little fuel leakage. First flight of the day... fuel up, prime the engine, turn it over without the glow driver for several turns, then hook up the glow driver, and it usually starts up on the second or third flip with my chicken stick. Very different from the Evolution..ha, but very easy to start and tune. DS. |
RE: Groovy 50 or venus 40?
That's the way to do it. Just get the engine in a 7 or 8 o'clock position and you are home free. If you want to move up a bit, I now have a OS-160 which is a dream. Same installation. Prime, one or two flics counterclockwise, and it runs.... always. I love that!

When you are in the main page with threads (like in "Pattern Flying" ), just select New Post (in the left upper corner, above the threads)
