2007 Pattern Nats

Ok who's going??!!!

I'll be there with a grand total of count em.....3 days of practice since last year!!!!! Woohooooooo this should be fun. Luckily I have a pretty good plane or 2 (hopefully 2) and I will need it :D

So, who's going, whatcha flying, pics?

I plan on posting some pics throughout and making some posts for those who can't be there. I'll try to make it useful and fun.

One reminder, PLEASE vote for the Concours de Elegance trophy!!! The guys entering this contest have spent a LOT of time and money on thier planes, and deserve to get a few minutes of your time and support. These are the guys that drive the modeling side of all of this. Please show your appreciation for thier efforts by taking the time to fill out the form and vote! Doesn't matter what you vote for...a scratch build, a custom built plane from overseas, an ARF somebody took the time to get fancy with, whatever it is, if it's entered and you think it's the coolest, vote for it! Rusty Dose has put a lot of time and energy into this thing and I for one think it's one of the best ideas to come down the pike in a very long time. When you see him, please take a moment and thank him for his hard work because trust me...nobody works harder than Rusty!

Here's a quick pic of my new toy. The prototype Black Magic VF3. Fast and dirty monokote job, flies like a wet dream. I may have the candy apple red plane with me as well, but that remains to be seen. I'll take some better pics later.

Mike,
It's in southeast Iowa.
Very rural.
We live on an acreage.
The background is mostly of the one that is vacant next to us then of course the house on the next acreage after that in the background.
The picture is taken at the front of our house.
I can fly off the back of our property...no pattern planes I'm afraid but things like U-Can-Do 60's are no problem.
I practice pattern off a private grass strip about 18 miles from our house.
The retired farmer is a great guy...has a hangar with a J-3 Cub he flys on pretty mornings.
I'm afraid there are only two of us now in Iowa that actively compete in pattern.
Now...if something could be done about the Winter...[X(]

I can't believe they don't have Tim Hortons in Chicago. Heck the city i live in no grocery store. no meat markets/deli's. No wendy's no burger king taco bell etc. But even we have a tim hortons. Funny thing though i've never been there. Oh i forgot we also have two mcdonalds and a arby's along with a Boston market.

Why do i still live here? Because i just had to spend FIFTY FIVE stinking dollars for a new garbage can so the new garbage trucks can pick it up.

Anyways i'll be there Late Monday night early Tuesday morning.
No i don't have the Black Magic done yet. Going to be there with the Tojeiro

That's ok, I have a 3 and with only 3 days of practice (which I don't have as of yet LOL) I don't think it's gonna help! But it'll be fun for sure. I'm just ready to go flying!

NICE planes, see ya all there!

Since we're closer to Japan/China/Hong Kong getting planes in here is easy? [8D]

Seriously, anyone can get them... you just have to cough up (choke...choke) enough money. Since I'm not a builder/painter and I know that Adrian isn't one either... having someone else build/paint for me is a boon especially when it can be done to my specs. Having the right connections helps too.

BTW, we just weighed Adrian's ProLine last night - ready to fly it weighs 10lbs 6.5oz (ready to fly without fuel of course). He's had the plane for 6 months already and hasn't even flown it!!! He better do it soon otherwise my eXodus will be flying before it... :D

MHester 07-13-2007 11:53 AM

RE: 2007 Pattern Nats

Yeah, but you still didn't give details on how that plane happened? I'm just curious is all, unless it was for a business venture of some sort, I've never see someone overseas do a plane like that one-off. But it IS cool!

I completely understand about the money and no time thingy. To a lot of people, why build a paint a plane when someone else could do it better and possibly cheaper? I usually say "if you have to ask, then you're DEFINITELY better off getting a plane like that". because if you're not into the building thing, it's just work, not fun, and not rewarding.

I'm just tickled to see so many planes available and the quality getting better all the time! I LOVE options and choices. One day I may own one of those killer overseas uber planes. But it would be more of a collector piece, because I enjoy my own stuff way too much. But I do so love the cool toys!!!

Like the new OS200EFI.....no, most people won't pay that. But it isn't meant for most people. It's meant for people who want the most expensive, coolest toy. Functionally I'm not sure if there is any advantage over a YS 170. I'm guessing a slight edge when it's all said and done, but I never use full throttle on my 160DZ as it is! And I have it slightly detuned...but it's a real screamer out of the box anyway.

Now I need to see if I will have one plane with me, or 2......

Hey, Mike
Derek is right, Being on the West Coast does make things a little easy, and it
help's to Know people.I'm leaving from LAX, this evening for Muncie.
I got a call from friend this morning, to meet him at the flying field.
I have not flown in 2 month's, so I had a chance to get some stick time
with his's new plane. The Filton Element 170, electric version, very nice flying
plane. My point is, that I cann't get 1 Element and this guy has 2, I got to wait until
December. I also need, some HELP guy's, The stab in my Evolution is not level an would
like to fix it before the Nat's start.did not have time before the plane was shipped.

You are correct - it is for a business venture of some sort... the plane is not going to be distributed in the US and will be for another market entirely. I just "happened" to know about it and used my persuasive skills to get them to built me one using my own colour scheme. :)

Ok I hate to bring this up but.....

Jarvis, did you check the wing shear webs on that one? Some are cross crain, not vertical. last thing I want to see is a wing fold. if you have and everything is fine, cool. if you haven't, check and I'll bring balsa and a knife if I have to [8D] Good flying plane BTW, but like all arfs in that price range, you have to discover each one's possible issues and take care of it. Not a huge problem IF you know about it before hand.

Man I can't believe it's almost time to leave!!! Oh BTW, make that 2 days...doesn't look like I'll get out of here today after all....

-Mike

Mike,
I am sure Jarvis checked the shear webs. He has already lost one due to this. Or maybe he has more rudder throw on the new one for knife edge with one wing panel. :D

Good luck to District 7 pilots!!!!!

RE: 2007 Pattern Nats

Hey,Mike
The new Wing has a 3/16 spare plate ,that starts at the Root and ends at the wing tube sleeve
it's about 8" long an the shear web run's the whole lenght of the wing. My Evolution was the
one that started, the talk about the Wing Mod. Ultra -RC sent my a new kit, only to find out that the stab tube is not level. I was plannig to fly my MK TOP Star 140, but put it in the dirt, so it
back up time.just finsh the Evolution before getting shipped. Mike I've sent so much money
for this trip to Muncie, that I had to take a plane are "WIFE" would have killed me if I would
have, told her that I was just going to watch.

Hey, I may not be a builder, but I did finished an ARF recently - the World Models Spot-On 120. It required me to glue the two wing halves together, not to mention the daunting task of mounting the canopy. Besides, even though, I'm not a builder, but I did stay at the Holiday Inn last night.

As for the ProLine, I'm just waiting for the perfect day:-

Wind - 3 mph
Temp - 23 degrees C
Humidity - 60%

And BTW, I actually did fly this past weekend (first time all year) and am planning to fly again tomorrow. Geez it's almost like old times.

Will be trying out the new 19x10 on the webra. The 18.1x10 just wasn't enough prop.

Did you try the 18.1x10W blade? It's a good prop, just a hair too much load for the DZ.

BTW you know you can fly the VF3 if you want. That goes for pretty much anybody, as time allows.

Hi guys,

I just read on the D7 site that some of your are going to stop at Springfield, Mo this weekend to get some practice time. That is great but one little hitch, we found out today that the property to our immediate south is having a huge rodeo for some charity on Saturday. We have to keep them happy to keep our field and it may not be possible to fly a pattern sequence with out getting over the horse arena. We are trying to get all club members to rerrain from flying on Saturday. Sunday there will be no problem what so ever for some good practice time.

Sorry for the bad news but it is a once a year deal and we need to keep the neighbors happy.

No, not the wide....but did try the 18.5x9.5 W and it was okay at two clicks richer setting. Tremendous brakes but I wasn't thrilled with the acceleration....a bit too much non-useful blade area that can easily be remedied. It has about 25% wider blade than the 18.1x10. I also didn't care for the very wide hub which interfered with the spinner cone. But the Webra has the beans for it so I felt that a 19x10 (reworked 18.1x10) would be just right.

I would definitely want to fly the model....maybe Saturday after the Finals??

Right now I'm getting ready to go out and play. It's a beautiful day here in NJ. I'll let you how the 19x10 worked

Mikey,

The 19x10 worked very well. Outstanding brakes and very good speed control throughout. A new plug allowed richer settings all around and the engine was happy. I got in six and let me tell you it's been a long time since I had this much fun.
