RE: Pattern Plane Recommendation

Here's a little backgound driving for what I'm searching for in a more "modern" pattern plane.

I started flying in 1974 when I was 8 years old. My Dad started in the 50's and flew reeds for years before opening his own Hobby Shop. The shop was more of a hobby than anything, he was a chemical engineer by day.

I started flying pattern when I was 13 and was competitive at 16. I became bored with it and started building warplanes. In other words, I have a fair amount of experience. My current pattern project is a Phoenix 6 from my own plans. Yep, I wanted a Phoenix 6 so bad and I couldn't find one on eBay. I decided to draw my own plans using a friend's fuse as reference and cores from Eureka.

I'm looking for a 2 meter pattern plane that looks nice with retracts. It's a fancy sport plane for me as I have no desire to spend my weekends at contests. I realize designs have evolved for a reason, aerodynamics and competition. I must be too old school to get turned on by the most current designs. Something more like the Slingshot pictures I posted earlier.

Thanks.

Bill

Thanks Rene69. I appreciate your reply. I checked out Bryan Hebert's web site. The Alferma isn't quite what I'm looking for. I'm not really interested in a biplane. It did lead me to the Patriot though. Nice lines and retracts too.

Speedracerntrixie,

Thanks for the support. I'm old school enough to appreciate the individuality of finishing a pattern plane. I was always wowed as a kid by the finish competition during our annual trip to Toledo. Remember the guys that put mirrors under their plane so you could see the bottom as well? It was like a car show. Pimp my Pattern Plane.

But I also appreciate arfs. My Dad hated them but he was too old to appreciate what they would do for our hobby. There's a lot more participants with them than without.

Bill

RE: Pattern Plane Recommendation

Bill, I agree 100%. We are now at a time where we can have much higher numbers then ever flying. I don't care for ARFs but I know lots of guys wouldn't be flying without them. But back to the good "ole days. When I was finally able to afford a pattern airplane, it was a Midwest Mach1 with Kraft Radio, retracts, Webra Speed .61 with pipe. It took me a week to build the airplane and another 2 months to paint it LOL. All K&B Superpoxy. I have a 5 port Rossi 61 FIRE and have been contemplating building a classic pattern airplane. Have you jumped over to that forum and seen how many events are popping up for classic pattern?

Hi FLAPSDOWN,

I misunderstood what you were after, and I'm sorry and this was my mistake. My reply was not intended to insult, nor offend you, but was a sincere effort to help.

I hope you find what you are after.

Hi Speed,

I'm on the classic pattern forum daily. I'm thinking about doing a build thread on my Phoenix 6. I'm just concerned that if it doesn't look exactly like it should, I'll scrap it. I wasn't able to find one and my buddy wasn't going to part with his. I like the P6 best of the entire Phoenix series.

I jumped over to this forum just to get some tips on an F3A pattern plane. I really liked the Slingshot, it's exactly what I'm looking for.

And, oh the good old days. I remember cutting off the cover of MAN and taping it to my wall with Yoshioka's Blue Angel on it. I flew Dirty Birdys with Rhom retracts and still have my Kraft series '74 radio with stainless steel open gimbals. I'd like to have it converted but am afraid to tamper with it. And K&B was what everyone used.

Good to hear from you but we'd better cut off this classic discussion. We'll be ostacized for being old school.

Bill

Bill,
You're an experienced modeler who likes to build. I present to you, my mostesteriestist favoritist 2M sleek looking good flying modern but still classic retractable beautiful precision aerobatics plane ever! It is Gator R/C's Typhoon 2+2. The plans are available and if you like it, I happen to have a set myself and can help you get the plans as well.

Wow! Scott, that's exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks so much for the reply.

I checked out Gator RC and it seems they're no longer in business. I saw something about Piedmont Models offering the Typhoon but I couldn't find a web site with information on the Typhoon. Remember, I've been flying scale planes for 25 years. I've been pretty far removed from pattern so I'm not well versed on suppliers and equipment.

I'm really interested in getting a set of plans. It's perfect. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Please share some details on yours. You know, engine, pipe, retracts, etc. I'm a big OS fan and like the looks of the 1.40. You see where I am at this stage. I'm trying to get up to speed and my uneducated decisions are based on looks. Oh well.

Thanks again, you have a great looking plane.

Bill

The plans are on RCU at:

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_10...m.htm#10904766

The pipe tunnel might be a little tight for the OS 140 but I'm sure it can be modified to work with a 2-stroke pipe. Usually setup with YS 4-strokes.

Bill,
John is exactly right on the plans.  Mine is hanging on the wall as a set of plans right now.  I was planning to put either a YS 1.20 in it or possibly the 1.40.  I agree with John on the tunnel but you could probably make it work.  I'll never forget seeing Ivan C. with this plane in Phoenix the first time.  Just wow.  I have been contacted by a gentleman to build  one for me but time has been tight lately and I haven't had the opportunity to get done what I need to in order to get this done.  I bought the plans from that thread for like $8.00 in PDF and printed them on a giant plotter I have here at work.

RE: Pattern Plane Recommendation

Reactivation of these old threads can get quite annoying.  Not looking at the dates I tried the links in the first 10 or so posts and not one worked right.  Is pattern so quirky that companies get in and out within a year.  I know that was true of the Global Avance but I thought that was just a fluke.

FLAPSDOWN 02-10-2012 09:33 AM

RE: Pattern Plane Recommendation

Thanks guys. I'm psyched and will stop at Kinko's on the way home tonight to have the PDF's printed. I really appreciate the help. By the way, I actually have a YS 1.40 I picked on eBay years ago. I watched it and made a game time decision to buy. I'm sure I had a future use in mind but only remember getting a good price for an unused engine.

What's interesting is I consider my Dirty Birdy and UFO classics and here the Typhoon from 1999 is now considered a classic. See how building scale planes can get you out of touch and corrupt your mind.

Sorry Scott, I assumed the picture was your plane. Let's get started and build them together. It'll help if two of us are sourcing materials and hardware at the same time.:) I'm sure my wife will be thrilled I'm starting another project.

Bill, what'd be great is if you would be kind enough to do a build thread with pix here! What a treat for all those interested. I don't know if you'd stick it in classic pattern or not.

Hi Wayne -

I thought your post was informative and was indeed a sincere effort to help. Can't understand why it got such a testy response. Too much caffeine?!?

You don't need to apologize imho.

RE: Pattern Plane Recommendation

rgburrill, sorry to have annoyed you by reopening an old thread. I didn't realize it would throw people off.

And Wayne, sorry for my remarks. I just didn't consider your suggestion for a Kaos 40 as a viable candidate for my orignal request searching for an "estetically pleasing 2 meter F3A plane with retracts". I thought you were just making a sarcastic remark. I should always assume positive intent. You may have missed the post where I reported building a Super Kaos with which to knock around.

I'll request the moderator to remove the thread. I'm going to pour over Typhoon plans this weekend with a glass of scotch. Thanks Scott.

Nothing beats the old school pattern missiles... My father has a bunch of old pattern planes as he used to work for a kit manufacture... My favorite to rip around with is a Wolfgang Matt arrow! Straight and level probably 110mph flies like its literally on a rail!!! I completely agree with the OP!!! Love the old school pattern!!!

Hey Mark. Thanks for the support. By the way, I started the wood Phoenix 6 build. I sheeted the stab first because I wanted to get the outline in the fuse sides right before I cut them. I have all the formers cut and may box the fuse this weekend between my daughter's soccer games. 5 this weekend.

I was going to do a build thread but fear if it doesn't look perfect I'll scrap it. At any rate, thanks so much for letting me use your P6 fuse to loft the outline and cross sections. We need to get together soon. We talked about the week after Xmas but I spent it at my sister's in Pittsburgh. She's fighting cancer and not doing well.

I'll keep you posted on the progress.

Best Regards,

Bill

When you open a dialogue people other than you, the OP, may also get advice and valid views from comments. Maybe you, the OP, didn't want a 40 size pattern type plane but others reading a subject entitled "Pattern Plane Recommendations" might. I, for example, search for a long time to find a 46 size patttern plane before finding the Avance. Not everyone has unlimited funds like you, the OP, claim to have.

Cripes, he apologized and explained his misread, and you have to give off your steam! Let it go, we all make mistakes and there's no need to fan the fire to please your self.

Hi,

Thanks for everyone who took the time to comment on my post.

FLAPSDOWN,

No harm done - I don't think you need to remove or close down the thread, it has a lot of information that may be useful to others. As a suggestion, you may want to go back and edit your post, and I'll do likewise with mine.
We are all modellers and I think the intent of this site is to help others as much as we can.

I'm glad you found what you were looking for.

Wayne

World Models had a pattern plane ARF with retracts I believe still available. I'm a fan of that older style too.

I have a Typhoon 2 + 2 that I bought 2nd hand and hope to get flying again this spring.

Good luck.

Hey Bill,
Anytime and anytime. I'm sure the P-6 build will go fine, hardly any of these looked the same back in the day unless they came off the same bench and out the garage door the same weekend! I know you're busy with the girls and the soccer games, but we'll get together soon. I've got the Tiger Tail III glassed and nearly ready for paint. It's getting a Rossi-n-a-pipe and hopefully be ready for Rusty's classic event in late may. I've got a wood D.B. 60 on the bench too, almost ready to cover, Kraft .61, no pipe, no retracts, and it's for the SPA events.

Regarding the F3A stuff, I wanted give that a try too, I picked up a Dream 110 late last year for five bills, Rx ready, JR 8411s, YS 1.20 and a Hatori pipe, flys like a Dream too! Picked up one newin the box last week for two bills and one table over a very clean, low time, YS 1.20 for it for well under one bill (from H. Parenti of all folks!). Point is, thereis good stuff out there for a very good price, love those swap meets!I think I saw a Typhoon not too long ago on the other site, might want to check back through the"airplanes, fuel section" to see.

Really sorry to hear about your sister, it's no easy road to travel. Tell her to keep a positive attitude and we all are hopingthe best for her. Talk to you soon.
Mark
