RE: best method to land 90 size pattern plan

No problem - I hope that helps you. Like Joe, I too was amazed when I saw just how slow a 2-meter Pattern plane can actually fly. Just be careful - like Jason said you don't want to get it so slow that you stall the wing before you want to. Keep in mind some 2-meter planes have a pretty low wing loading compared to a 90-size Pattern plane. That means the 90-size plane may need to land a little faster. If you have a field with a long runway, start practicing the technique but don't force the landing if it looks like you're going to overshoot. Just wait until it settles in and let it land correctly. Eventually you'll get the feel and you should be able to hit the center line no matter what the wind conditions are. One note on that: be very careful if you're landing into a gusty headwind. I've seen guys rely too much on the headwind to maintain lift therefore they come in with too slow of a ground speed. If the wind suddenly stops - bang! I've seen it happen more than a few times. Always be wary of your ground speed, it's better to overshoot a little rather than drop it short and hard.

I watched a pilot try to 'steer' his 90-sized plane to the runway today with the rudder and the results were ones that no one should have to experience. It landed on the wing-tip and nose [:o]. Rudder is used only for small corrections.

Yeah, thanks John!

Definitely a different style than I'm used to. I'd guess my plane has a heavier loading than a full 2M plane, too. Already had trouble with that once[&o] New one's doing very well though:D

Jason,
Yeah I can picture what it looked like. LOL And you guys have those beautiful fields with 500' paved runways. :) You should see where I fly: a "Bambino" Little League field with fences everywhere. And tall airplane-grabbing trees at either end. Always a cross wind... LOL

Seriously, like anything else the setup is the key. If you're set up correctly on final you should only need to make small corrections. Jamming the rudder to extemes when you're low and slow is a recipe for disaster.

Joe - you have to fly one of my 2 meter planes this season. I know you like your Venus and yes it is a great airplane (I still have one and I really like the way it flies) but until you've flown a light 2-meter plane, some of this stuff just won't make sense. Plan on going to as many contests this season as possible - and bring a foamy. You have to go to the other end of the extreme to get the whole picture and become a great pilot.
