The equipment,...............
Fliton Element composite 170: Engine: YS-170DZ Mount: YS super mount Prop: APC 18.1x10W Spinner: Great Planes 3 inch Pipe&Header: Hatori 821 and 822 Servos: Rudder: Futaba 9350 Wings: Futaba 9154's Stabs: Futaba 9650's Throttle: Futaba 3004 Transmitter: Futaba 9Z-WC2 Reciever: Futaba 149DP Battery: TP-1100 Lipo Futaba switch for digitals Overall weight ready to fly: 10lbs 12 oz,..plenty of room to get lighter (battery, throttle servo, use the factory carbon gear). Incidence: Wings= 0 Stab=0 Engine=0 CG: 6.4 inches from the leading edge,...a slightly nose heavy start. My apologies on the crutch I installed,...I was wearing a sweater and as I was tacking it in place with CA,..it was moved. The crutch was made out of 3/32 balsa, cross grained and lightened. The weight was less than half and ounce on the scale. Flight report: WOW! With room to improve and more comments to follow,.......:D Best Regards, Bill Holsten Fliton Team Pilot |

I have to add a thank you to Alex and Mr.Lee for delivering it to the Tangerine contest for me. And my buddy Scott (My caller, good friend, coach and critic) as seen in the photo,...will give you an idea of how big this plane is.
Also,..photos' of the actual production composite 170 can be found at www.flitoncompetition.com under gallery,..pretty plane! But here are the photos anyway. Best Regards, Bill Holsten Team Fliton |
RE: Element Composite 170
can this plane us an OS 160
|
RE: Element Composite 170
The composite can use a OS-160 with the mini pipe only. The wood version you can use the full lenght tunned pipe, as the entire belly pan is removable for the one piece wing.

RE: Element Composite 170
Hey, Bill
Where did you get the Plane Stand,is it theone that on RCU, under New Stand ? The picture's were taking at the Pardo flying site in Chino, Ca, the Guy holding the Comp 170 is Tak, and I'm the one that's been flying Alex's plane. We are putting together 2ea ARC that will be glassed and painted. The fuse will have a DEP's system, no servo's in the stab. |
RE: Element Composite 170
A buddy of mine here makes the stands and sells them for $150.00 or $175.00,..everything on ot folds down,...best piece of field equipment I own. :D
The plane looks sweet,.....maybe I can get one instead to go with the proto-type I have. I ordered one,...but it has not arrived yet,...did you guys get my plane,...lol!:D How do you like the plane? Best Regards, Bill Holsten Fliton Team Pilot |

ORIGINAL: advanced2 The composite can use a OS-160 with the mini pipe only. The wood version you can use the full lenght tunned pipe, as the entire belly pan is removable for the one piece wing. Regards, Bill Holsten Team Fliton Why couldn't a pipe tunnel floor be fitted, as in my Integral and Impact pics below ?? Wouldn't be too bigger jub I wouldn't think . . The header would need clearance at the side of the fuse . . same as the YS but higher. Would probably need a clearance hole cut across the fuse and the chin cowl join, but no big deal (again, like my Integral). |
RE: Element Composite 170
Hey Jeff,
I is possible,..but I think with the AFR composite it would be alot of work in removing the servo tray, etc or adding a pipe tunnel floor. The other thing is,..where the chin cowl mates to the fuse is very narrow,..again,..not impossible. I would recommend the composite ARC, as nothing but the firewall/rail mount system is mount,..I believe? For the do it yourselfers out there that have the time, the ARC is a great option. These planes have many custom options upon request,...personalized color schemes, etc. The composites are special order only and built upon request,..these are not mass produced. Hope that helped? Best Regards, Bill Holsten Team Fliton |
RE: Element Composite 170
Thanks Bill . .
Ahhh I see. It comes with the Rudder Servo Mount (and tank mount?) already installed ?? . . makes it hard. Might be better to supply them loose for the customer to fit? Fitting that stuff is a "walk in the park", and allows easier options with engine choice. I realise a lot of guys are flying YS . . but there are MANY who choose to run 2 strokes for various reasons, and the installed gear in the equipment bay (difficult to fit a pipe tunnel) cuts out some valuable market for Fliton . . AND probably the market this plane might be more attractive to ?? maybe ?? Cheers, JB PS. What was the finished weight of yours with the YS ?? |
RE: Element Composite 170
Hey Jeff,....
I ran an OS-160's for several years in pattern planes before switching to YS. I like the change,...the OS-160 is still a great alternative as is others (not sponsored by YS). The ARC is the best bet to do what ever a flier/builder wants to do and as I said, you can request many options with the ARF. It's not impossible but something to work around with the ARF version. I could get a 2 stroke in mine by fitting a pipe floor under the pre-installed floor of the ARF,...not impossible. It would be very similar to making the crutch for the admidship area and rear of the plane.,...but possible. The Integral is a tight fit as well in making a two stroke work. RE: Element Composite 170
New updates and photos of this past weekend,...will load tonight!
The plane is flying great,...I move the CG back,..will measure it when I get home. Everything is still at zero and no unusual mixing yet, except 2% throttle to elevator and thats it. Once the CG is where I want it, I will start working with the incidence if needed,..don't expect I am going to,..will see. My high expectations of the Element have been met thus far with some more tweeking to go.:D Regards, Bill Holsten Team Fliton |

Bill ... nice to see that huge smile on your face. She looks great and as you say, it flies well! Now ... when might one come my way? Hmmmm ...

RE: Element Composite 170
I have no idea on that one,.....I would imagine it wouldn't be to long.
Hows yours doing Chris,...get anymore time on it,...where did your CG end up on yours? I was just curious if the wood and composite are close or not. I know you have a totally different set up as well. We have a video on the way,...:D Regards, Bill Holsten Team Fliton |
RE: Element Composite 170
Just got back from flying it Bill. 65 degrees, sunny, no wind. Perfect for trimming. Still working on cg a little. Today I tried it in various locations. I'm more forward than what I have heard is a good starting point. But I did move it back some today. And I liked the result. I think I am around 6" from the leading edge right now. It went to 5" before the knifes were straight. I'm thinking that is too far forward. My upline now is good, and I have a slight pull to the canopy in downlines. Slight pull to the gear now in knife. This is with the cg I tried today. To achieve what I want, I would need more positive incidence. Not so easy to do on a 1 piece wing plane. I have probably 40 flights on it now.

RE: Element Composite 170
Kool Chris,
I started at 6.4 inches and it was nose heavy. I am at 7 inches now and that feels pretty darn good. No knife pulls or pushes, down line is go,..45's are good. It does shallow out inverted like it's really tail heavy,...so I think I will add some down thrust to the engine or see if I can adjust it out with the wings without changing what I have to bad. I know it will change,..just how much? Good to know yours is flying well! The CG's are kind'a close?:) Regards, Bill Team Fliton |
RE: Element Composite 170
I imagine the wings are the same. So the cg should be the same. I wish I could dial in some more incidence though. Oh well, time to setup the Beryll for this year..
