It should work with any receiver.

The old fp-r4f is AM and on the old (now illegal) 72/75 Mhz band or 27 Mhz:
http://manuals.hobbico.com/fut/3fn-4...6fn-manual.pdf
Only the esc plug into the Rx and drive the motor so it doesn't matter what type of motor(brushed/brushless)is used as long as the esc is appropriate. These older Futaba receivers used "G" connectors rather than "J" type so you'll need those for servos and esc!. The center pulse in olders Futaba is also 1.32ms instead of 1.5ms but that should only affect neutral position with modern servos(older Futaba servos with "G" plug will center normally).

Then there is that Rx: MCR-4A sold with FP-4NBL which had a built-in brushed esc(page #4):
http://manuals.hobbico.com/fut/4nbl-manual.pdf
This one is more recent than the one first linked to and while being AM uses post-1991 frequency. The brushed esc is good for up to 8.4V batt. and the Amp draw of a "500" size brushed motor maximum(30 A max). That Rx cannot be used with an external esc for brushless use.

EXPLAIN ABOUT ILLEGAL?pLEASE
In 1991, the FCC required all RC radio manufacturers to switch to Nattow Band Tx and Rx. They expanded the number of channels available to 50. You had to get your transmitter Gold Stickered to be able to use it.

Rich, what problems are caused by using this radio?

The newer 50 channels that we now use are spaced closer together in the 72Mhz band. The older radios that are not Narrow Band certified can spray a signal out on either side of the frequency that they are tuned to and overlap the channels on either side. You could shoot down someone's aircraft at your flying site.

Given the cheap cost of some of the newer, cheaper 5 channel 2.4Ghz radios, you would probably be better off buying a 2.4 system. With 2.4, you do not need Frequency Pins, there is much less chance of being interfered with by RF noise, and you don't have to worry about anyone shooting you down or you shooting down anyone else.
