Default JR Crystals--3 dot printed on them

A hobby shop owner/operator told me that they are for identifying which crystals match up with others

Example; One TX crystal that has a dot on the left side of the crystal is better matched for a RX crystal with the dot on the same side. I hope i explained it ok.

Basically, what are the dots for??

Beaver,

The LHS guy was basically correct. Although any (pick a channel, let's say 36) channel 36 JR receiver crystal will work with any JR channel 36 transmitter crystal, they work best... i.e. longest range and less prone to interference... if they are matched. If I'm not mistaken, JR tries to match within one position when they ship a system. In other words, no transmitter with a "left dot" crystal gets shipped with a "right dot" receiver crystal. As I understand it, the crystals are "graded" at the factory to come up with the dot position. This dot position is a relative indicator as to how close to the advertised frequency the crystal actually operates. I don't know the actual deviation allowances, but I'm sure they're pretty small.
