This is not meant to be a brand war, only to show paying a lot up front over time is not that
much overall. Think about all the features you get in the higher end stuff for all that time!
I had a 10x back in the early 90's, sold it to buy a SYN TX/RX setup (9ZHPS).
I bought a Futaba 9ZHPS in 94. The SYN feature cost me $400 back then.
I switched from JR to Futaba for the SYN feature, flying at the Sepulveda basin there were 1 to 6 people on the
same freq as me. If JR had a syn setup back then, Its possible I could be JR today.
The 9ZHPS has 9300+hours of (on time-flying time combined) logged since then.
I bought it for $1450, (1450/9300=0.1559) or 16cents per hour. By the way it still works.
The cost over time verses all the features is small.
Repairs done to it.
3 gimbals replaced,
gimbal wiring repaired 4 times,
on the 4th battery now.
4 switches replaced.
In 2006 I bought a Futaba 14MZ, I hope to get similar time from it. Who knows.
It will get the 2.4GHz module from Futaba so I will have both 72 and 2.4 in full 12+2 channels.
In all this time they had every thing I ever needed excluding channels
for any plane I have, using 3 to 12 channels. I have not lacked for features.
I puckered when I handed over the $100 bills but it is forgotten shortly afterward and I benefit from all the features
for years later.
Back to the point, high cost to buy up front, is low cost over time and you get tons of features, be it JR, Futaba or any other brand.
Just my experience,
Tony

Yeah, the addition $$$ up front stinks, but one of the features I like most about my a 12 channel radio (mine just happens to be a FUT 12Z) is that you may not have to use Y-Harnesses, reversing Y-Harnesses, Matchboxes, MSA-10's etc. The extra channels may afford you the opportunity to do the needed mixing/matching without the presence of these other gizmos.
Now, I am not saying that the cost savings in not having to buy these other gizmos will exactly make up the difference in price ..... but it actually may be closer than you think ....... if you have multiple airplanes.
One could also (perhaps) argue that the presence of these other gizmos may be additional potential failure points .... that would perhaps not be present if a 12 channel radio/receiver were in use.
Just something to think about .... Bob
