.18 Engine in RS4 SS?
Im looking for a good .18 size engine to stick in my RS4 SS, to replace my Fantom. First, will .18 size enignes fit in this car? Second, can you guys reccomend me a good one? Im looking for one that is rear exhaust, slide carb, and a pilot shaft. This is the one Im considering right now

Also, can someone help me find a tuned pipe that would work with a .18 size engine?

RE: .18 Engine in RS4 SS?
Yup, it certainly can be done. Make sure you purchase an engine with a std. threaded crank. The SS flywheel won't work with an SG shaft engine. Here is a pic of my Epic .18 powered SS (scroll down the page to find my post) The Epic .18 was a slick swap, and all of my existing SS parts bolted right on. What a rush of torque compared to the sackless .12SS engine!!

Damn, that looks really nice. I like more torque, but did it also give you a higher top speed? Also, is that a THS pipe?

RE: .18 Engine in RS4 SS?
My brother has the HPI .18 engine ready to go in his SS, but hasn't put it in yet so I can't tell you how it performs. I can tell you it feels HEAVY! I haven't weighed it vs the old engine but damn it seems like a lot of weight.
I can't see myself going with more than my .15 Fantom I have now. I have an 04 model but plan on getting the new one when it comes out very soon. I break dog bones and what not already so I can't imagine if I had the torque of a .18 in there. Just too much for the car IMO.

a lot
100% satisfied with it. Not very expensive, good power, torque and sounds great with their steel pipe. Can't wait for this years to come out so I can put my now old one in my truck and give my car the new one.

RE: .18 Engine in RS4 SS?
I have an O.S. .18 cvr-x
lots of torque and VERY fast!!!
setup with 17/21 pinions and 43/39 spur gears
very VERY quick in parking lot racing
OS.18 engine is great and easy to tune
Engine heavier so highly recommend stiiffening up suspension aswell

Im really torn between the Epic and O.S.. O.S. has power and reliability, and is a well known product, but the specs on the Epic are very impressive, so i dont know what to do. Maybe base it on price??

RE: .18 Engine in RS4 SS?
I dont have or have seen an epic but... there have been dyno tests of both
engines in the rc mags(cant rember which ones) but I do have both articles
and the dyno numbers show that the OS should spank the epic in torque, hp and
revs!!!
epic = 1.18hp o.s. = 1.56
epic = 43oz/in o.s. = 60oz/in
I have my rs4 currently geared for max acceleration and the back end easliy comes
around if you are not perfectly strait when mashing the throttle...
Get the o.s. more power, great tuning...can't go wrong buying O.S. 18cvr...

RE: .18 Engine in RS4 SS?
Ok, everyone has told me to get O.S. engines, as they are well known, reliable, easy to tune etc...so ok, ill go this direction. I see O.S. has a new line of .18 sized engines. The one im lookin at getting is below, but when i checked the specs on O.S.'s website, it said that it only had 1.35 hp, which seems quite low for a .18 size engine, and doesnt seem to compare to Epic's 1.8 hP engine. Any thoughts? Also, does anyone know if the O.S. engine im looking at is a rear or side exhaust engine, I looked all over and couldnt find the answer. thanks. Here are links to the O.S. engine and Epic enginie.

RE: .18 Engine in RS4 SS?
I just took off my HPI .18. I kept on breaking dogbones. And it had way too much power. I snapped 2 dogbones and I am sure the others will follow in a little while. I liked the speed though. The engine was great, idled fine and the transisions were fine from start to finish. I am either going to sell my engine or put it on an MT sometime.

RE: .18 Engine in RS4 SS?
How does the engine's power cause dog bones to break? Im not saying it doesnt happen, cause people told me this happens, but I cant imagine a powerful engine doing that kind of damage...Anyways, any suggestions about the O.S. or Epic engines? Thanks

RE: .18 Engine in RS4 SS?
It is like twisting a vehicles driveline into. Whe had a Freightliner that was going up hill that twisted the front driveline like you would twist a rag. If you have the power or even a weak link or the two together something is going to give.

RE: .18 Engine in RS4 SS?
I have had the Epic .18 for about 2 months now, no dogbone problems at all. Very happy with the Epic, runs very consistant. My SS is STUPID fast and torquey. The Epic is a side exhaust engine.

RE: .18 Engine in RS4 SS?
Thanks Polarbus...Ive got some more questions...For your epic, who makes the engine mount that you are using, what gear ratio are you using, which clutch and flywheel are you using? Since this is a bigger size engine over the .12 and .15, Im guessing the stock components HPI makes for their engines wont fit onto the Epic .18. Thanks for the help
