I'm using a .18CVR from OS and I have a blast with it. What a great, trouble free engine.

RE: best aftermarket motor for ntc3?
I just replaced the .15 Picco (now in my truck) with a new RB 3 Port V12 motor. My buddy has a C12 in his Nitro Mt and he loves it (except for it destroying his diffs all the time). I have yet to get a chance to even break this motor in, so I can't really comment. O.S. motor's are usually easy to tune, and run really strong. I had a .15 CVR in my NTC3 a while back and loved it....it just wasn't crazy enoguh for me though (this is before they offered a .18).

A racing .12 will have as much or more power than the .18cvrx. Well, mainly more RPM...upward to nearly 40k worth of rpm. Proper gear mesh and gearing will keep your gears safe...unless you run in a heavily debris littered area. As far as power goes, the epic has NOWHERE near 1.8HP and 40k rpm...it barely had much more power than the Novarossi MT12. The .18cvrx is KING of all .18s engines busting out with 1.6hp and 33krpm +. It has replaced the OS .15cvrx which is why you dont see them too often. The OS goes for about $100 or less. The NTC3 accepts short cut crank shaft or SG. I'd personally go for the SG shaft as it's easier to assemble the clutch onto as well as spins true. As for as best, there IS no such thing as best. You can get a race engine to bash with if you want, but it's just not worth shelling the $$ for one when you can get some good power for half price.

The way the two speed works is that when the 2speedreaches a certain rpm, the clutch shoe grabs the inside of the 2nd gear housing and powers that gear. In first gear the 2speed shoe will spin freely on the shaft as it has no oneway bearing. make sure the screws are adjusted to the same amount of turns.

RE: best aftermarket motor for ntc3?
Hi all...if all goes well, I will soon be blessed with a team associated ntc3 kit with a fantom racing engine. I am new to this (first rc) and I am curious if this is a good engine to be paired with. The owner informs me that I could be looking at about 70 mph...does this sound right?

I don't no about 70mph if the only upgrade is the motor. and the nitro tc3 also accepts pilot shafts i have one on mine connected to the all mighty .18cvr but if you want crazy power which i plan on getting next then you want the .18 o.s. tz

LOL the owner must be a newcomer as well. At most the NTC3 will go around the 60mph range or so especially if the gearing is stock.

If they were alum spur gears you'd still change them. They won't last any longer than plastic. The only way is to properly set gear mesh and run on a clean surface. I haven't seen such spur gears for the NTC3 anyway.

I think GH made 'em a while back for the NTC3.
I tore up one of the stock plastic spurs on my old NTC3, but that was just because I cruised right through a gravelly spot.

RE: best aftermarket motor for ntc3?
well thanks for the heads up...I don't need a 70 mph car anyhow lol....60 is fine by me (maybe still a little too much...lol). but I guess the nice thing with having that much speed is that I can always back off right. (yeah like that'll happen). Like I said hopefully the deal goes through...I am also looking at an hpi rs3 evo 3 with a picco .12 but the ntc is my first choice...

A nitro sedan can go 60mph as well as an 8th onroad. The only difference is that an 8th onroad only takes 3 seconds or less to get to that speed while a nitro sedan takes about 4 seconds. Acceleration matters a lot besides just top speed. Nitro dragsters can achieve 75mph in 1.5 seconds or so.

RE: best aftermarket motor for ntc3?
My amateur opinion - if you can get the OS.12tz 5 port - do so. This thing is so tight, I had to pry the flywheel past TDC everytime until it fired. I couldn't find a starter box that wouldn't spin the belt. A ridiculously powerful little motor it is, don't even think I got the thing in 2nd gear (by the way, is there a distinct shift that can be heard?) and I couldn't stop it to save it (remember, i am green). Granted I wasn't in the most accomodating parking lot and it had drift tires on at the time but still. I don't know why one would need more mmphh that this.
I am another newby. I too have been blessed with a new NTC3 from a friend. I got it fully assembled with an unrun tz 5 port & an OFNA pipe (which has already met it's demise [:'(]) and a two speed from someone I do not know. I ripped the stinger off the pipe and snapped the rear shock tower in the crash as well, thankfully no other damage - just some very slight alignment issues. Before the crash I found that with the steering turnbuckles (tie rods where I come from) attached to the foreward most mount point on the wheel knuckle, the wheels do not turn equal amounts both ways. I have since put them on the rearward mounts and from the little I have examined it appears to be equal.....so has anyone ever seen this or am I way off base? ANY help is greatly appreciated.
