R-40 Nice high speed parking lot Basher!!
Since HPI is discontinued the R-40 you can pick them up at a reduced price or on E-bay cheap . If you want a high speed parking lot basher this car can be converted into one for a small investment. First thing you want to buy is a OS .18TZ get it from tower hobbies usually for about $125.00 dollars. This is a mighty mouse motor and will drop right into the R-40. The second idem you want to get is a set of rear tires from Calandra Racing . Calandra's tires are unique because they are 35mm wide instead of 28- 30mm wide. This extra width will give yo an added boost in traction. Next put the tallest gear ratio you can on the R-40. Then you need to make a few adjustments to your chassis crank up the castor on the front end so the car will have a natural tendancy to track straight, set your toe to neutral and lenghten the wheelbase on the lower rear suspension arms by moving the little clips around. These adjustments should make your can very stable and handle well even with the .18 motor. Carefully choose your parking lot try to find one that is clean and use a leaf blower to clean it off before you race, this should cut down on belt wear .

This car handles very well and is quite durable. I run mine with a oneway up front and a 4 gear diff in the back packed with 30,000 weight grease. 2.5 degrees negative camber rear, 2 degrees negative camber front. 3 degrees toe - in rear, neutral toe on front.

I did have a problem with the plastic shocks and the 2 - speed. The plastic shocks threads stripped so I could not adjust my shocks I replaced them with some associated shocks 40 weight shock oil up front 35 weight shock oil in the rear. The tranny clutch shoes were too large for the 2nd speed hub so I had to sand them down after correcting those 2 problems I have not had any trouble out of the car. I don't know how I could have gotten clutch shoes that were too big for my tranny but I did

My R-40 continues to impress me . Yesterday I took it out and was runnning it on a parking lot when a loose rear locknut came off the rear end. The right rear wheel went flying and my car did a highspeed cart wheeel in the grass for abou 25 feet!! I was preparing myself for the worst I figured the chassis was damaged, bent or I broke some cvd's , stripped a servo or something like that!! When I reached my car and inspected it up close no damage at all!! I put locktite on the threads of the rear axle and replaced the locknuts. I consider myself lucky. But this car is a tank ,it may be a little heavy but man is it durable!!

I have seen them for as low as $150.00 on E-bay sometimes you can catch them on sale in hobbyshops you have to hunt for the bargain priced ones. Tower hobbies still has some race versions but they are not giving you much of a discount .[&o]

No I am not. The Hara edition would make a better foundation but they are a little harder to find at a bargain price.
