Default Tamiya TG-R

Just wondering, how did the Tamiya TGR rate?
Was it good?
handled good? etc?

Also, virtually all parts between TGR and TGX are interchangable aren't they?

Its discontinued so I woouldn't get one if I were you. I can't imaging it being particually good even in its day with a 1/8th scale chassis and a .15 engine.

I think they were pretty good they are not true one eigth scales more of a super size 1/10th like same size as the super RS4 from HPI. They are not overly fast with the stock motor but with a 18TZ they don't do bad and the extra size and weight makes them more stable at speed I think with the right pinion and motor they do over 60mph. They are indeed now discontinued and unfortunately only a few TGX spaers fit the TGR, TGR spares are very hard to find now. If you have a soft spot for the TG series a TGX is a better bet as the spares and hop ups are still around, I have a TGX which is slowly gaining every hop up I can find and the last one to go in it will be the 18TZ. I got mine because A) I loved the Calibra shell when it came out B) I loved the car when it came out but I was only 14 so there was no way I could afford one C) when I saw one recently on ebay I just had to get it for a bit of 'nostalgia'. I think from what most say the TGX with hop ups and chassis tuning does pretty good but needs a bigger track then a 1/10th touring car but the TGR was meant to be awesome in its day and some say it can still hold its own although most are shelf queens these days. Another thing I like about these cars is because they are slightly bigger they run better at parking lots.

Yeah pretty much the only competiton the super RS4 had although the Tamiya was out first I think, there was also the Kyosho landmax but that was a rallycross car. I will get some pics of my TGX up when I have it finished.

Does anyone know how many of the parts are interchangable between TGX and TGR?
As they are the same car/chassis

Yeah that is pretty much stock the motor was some sort of weird low cg thing not sure how it performed but the chassis was meant to be great, most of the hop-ups on that car are internal so it was a pretty well specced car for its day. They sell for a fortune these days if you can find one, thats why I settled for the TGX which was the model on which the TGR was based although they are very different cars, but I always wanted a TGX so I had to get one even if it is outdated.

I don 't think very much is I am afraid, I think driveshafts, wheels, tyres, pinions, spurs but not much else. Although the TGR is the offspring of the TGX Tamiya went to town on it, they moved the diffs around to get the chassis balance right and everything sits lower on the chassis to give it a low CG thats why it handles so well.

I noticed the diffs are open on a TGR as well, however seems that ball/one way diffs interchange? Not sure anyway

If you want a TGR, there are now 2 in ebay for sale!
I was tempted... but parts are too hard to find

No I don't want a TGR they are too much for parking lot bashing the TGX is good enough for me and parts are still around on ebay, I have pretty much fully hopped mine up with parts from japan quite cheaply really, for example a two speed trannsmission was less then half the price of a two speed for most current touring cars.

But why support so hard to fing for such a car? It's the model old or it's Tamiya's fault?

I had the TGX for a while as my first car. I still kick myself for selling it. It wasn't the fastest car but it handled great for bashing around. It could also take a beating, and I gave it a good beating every time I took it out.

Well I am overall happy with the TGX
I haven't had much experience with Nitro cars however from friends etc mine is still quicker (I have an OS 15CVR on it though) and my friends cars keep breaking control arms etc, where as my TGX, I have rolled it, crashed it etc etc and to date I haven't broken anything. The only thing I needed to replace is the rubber O-ring for the fuel tank. Got 5 of them for about $1 and the first of the 5 is still holding strong a couple of years later.
TGX also has enclosed gearbox, diffs, electrics etc, I've even driven mine in the wet without any issues, where as my friends cars can't go in the wet.

Handling wise it's better than my TB-01 Electric as well, and just now I am starting to play around with the suspension (I just ran a rear swaybar before for tighter turn in)
I've changed now the alignment, shock geometry, lowered it + got a set of Tamiya progressive springs to put into it and will add the front swaybar as well as oil into the diffs to make them more into limitted slip diffs
hops ups themselves are around, but finding tyres/wheels is the toughest thing for me

Yeap, I saw pics of a TGX and I can say It's really solid. Running it the wet isn't just great??? I once raced on a wet track...it was awesome!

Yeah it was fun in the wet only on full throttle it would spin out so I had to feather it, plus the TGX is quite heavy at around 2kg and it's wet handling characteristics were very realistic. Though they are in the dry too as the suspension is soft and it has quite a lot of body roll

Have you tried go karting in the wet? Now, THAT is fun!

Probably because the model was discontinued a long, long time ago

Yes I know...but Tamiya is supposed to provide support for any model!!! Like HPI does usually does...a direct order from the company maybe?

Don't know...
But how much hassle/cost is in that?
Just need to find other cars that share the same size. Kyosho? Anything there?
