Need Advice HPI RS4
I am new to onroads but want to upgrade the motor to a OS .18 TZ. What am I all going to need to do this. Stock HPI RS4 motor mount should work correct? Drop right in? Do I get the rotary carb or slide carb .18TZ?? Also can I use the stock clutch off the stock motor and flywheel and all? I found a backplate for it for the roto start so that is what I am going to do. So then I should probably just get the 18 TZ for 149 at towers with the pullstart on die to the fact I will need the OWB for the roto anyways. Here is what I have so far. Let me know if I am missing anything. Thanks in advance.
Backplate: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...7&I=LXHPS1&P=K
Motor: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXHLV9&P=SM
Now I just need a pipe.

RE: Need Advice HPI RS4
I'm not a genius on this. But this question has been asked a lot so I can almost answer some it for you.
The TZ is not a direct drop due to the fact it has a rear exhaust you will need to modify it for it to fit in the RS4.
The CV-R is more of a direct drop with motor mounts.. You might have to shave done the pull start and holder like I had to.
Do you have a local hobby shop..?
Because ,I have seen a TZ and CV-R already sold from OS with a backplate on it..

Hey Jeremy, first of all welcome! The 18TZ is a great little engine but it is powerful. This has been a big topic around here and you got some reading to do. Below are few links that will help you out and once you are done do a search and enter "OS 18TZ". Make sure you select "HPI On-ROAD" under "Search in Forum" You will get a ton of info on this topic.

You are basically on the right path. Here is the Header you will need:
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXFAZ8&P=7
Pipe is up to you. I had this one on my HPI 18ss and it was a great little pipe, not to mention the price!
http://www.rcmart.com/catalog/produc...ducts_id=21804
I believe they sell the complete kit but I dont think the header will be long enough. Your safest bet is to go with the HPI header. Fox222 has this set up and it looks awesome. On one of the threads above there are some pics of his car. He is a really nice guy and Im sure he can help you out.
Make sure you read up on the shaft upgrades you might have to do. That TZ has some serious torque and you might be braking parts sooner than you imagine. The RS4 is a great car but you will need to do your homework and get the right upgrades to enjoy it to the fullest!
Good luck and I hope this helped a bit.

RE: Need Advice HPI RS4
What version of the RS4 you have? If not the 18ss version you should upgrade your drivetrain to heavy duty parts, so they can handle the overpower. Especially needed when using soft fams too!!!

Thanks so much for the information. If I do it I will do it right and put all the upgraded driveline components in right away. Anyone know if the rotostart backplate will fit behind the OS? I do not want to go box with it I would like to keep the roto start.

yup, it may be a problem eventually, but honestly, if you want to get a good time out of your tires, get something like a 50 shore, which is harder, has great traction, they're cheaper, and will give a little when you punch it so things dont tighten up and get brittle.

I agree with ferrarimk13...very hard foams should not cause a problem. But if you wanna go full play then do what we mentioned above.
