a nitro crawler is a cool but worthless idea. you could do it with a savage, geared with a hb 12 tooth cutch bell and a ribison racing 54 tooth spur, rig the tranny with 3 speep dgears and the diffs with hb stuff and heavy oil. then moab tires and a .46 engine.
you spent $600 and it crawls half as good as a stick

the savage frame would'nt be a good "crawling" chassis....the springs are too stiff and you can't get good flex...

The only OK nitro crawlers are the x-factor and revo but you atill have the clutch and tranny crap to worry about...

not to say nitros will never crawl but they will never crawl like electric you cant beat the the weight and the low center of gravity that you can get with a electric therefore get the climbing ability it might come close but no cigar all you have to do is dump the one way in the trans and install a electric motor and walla

I never said a nitro will never crawl. They may someday, I know Mechanical Bob has been working on one for over a year.

But will it be competitive or even comparable to the performance of an electric? I highly doubt it!

So what's the point?

Just to say it's been done?

What's next a steam powered crawler, maybe a windmill powered crawler, a sail powered rig would be different.

nitros would be the ultmate scale rock crawlers if they would only crawl like we wanted to and for all you believers out there there will become a time when they will crawl . there is so many possibilities out there that companies are working on because crawling is getting huge . its already at sema shows and other huge events so it will come when there will be factory crawlers from major companies then sponsored drivers and so on. cant wait its all goooooood I like them all. if you can control it its in my book

the only way you will get a nitro crawler to compete with a electric is that you will have to make i hydraulic drive train and us the nitro engine to run the pump.

for all of you guys that think the revos can crawl, i'm am sorry but that is not real rock crawling (in rc comp's that is considered prerunning and you will be disqualified). the only reason revos go over rocks is because they more wheel spin and horse power. there is no torque because the centrifugal clutch system will not deliver any engine torque until the engine has high RPMs. then that torque becomes HP because you are now on the power band.

if you guys want to make a nitro crawler that's way cool but this is just my opinion, if your going to build a nitro crawler and put $600 into it you are just wasting your money. just go to you LHS and buy a TLT and put $300 into it and you will have a crawler that will beat a nitro crawler any day!

$600 seems a bit high... more like $300... for a good one....ive been shopping around for a while and the most expensive thing on the list is a lathe... if i could find axles to take the torque it would be made already...

it sounds like were gonna need a new type of nitro engine , so that 1. its still nitro 2. its got some crazy powerband which mimics an electric motor , chances are it will trade off on the good qualities of a normal nitro engine so it can function at a low rpm range or something, plus some active cooling system on it, and a transmission that weve never seen before...

actually , bringing up steam power doesnt sound so silly to me, its similar to electric in that it has full torque at no rpm, the only issue would be weight... best used for locomotives, i guess!

the nitro engines work at a practical rpm... the only issue is no company makes a transfer case with the right reduction... electrics make power at full load, nitro at 15,000....its just a question of gear ratio's.....and as long as you run rich crawling rpm's shouldnt be a problem..

"electics make power at full load"

LMAO...is that why you can crawl at like 1/8 throttle?!

Perhaps if someone made a 4-stroke boat engine. That way it could be liquid cooled and produce a bit more torque at lower RPM. That is the direction I was heading until I went to electric power. Of course, I had no idea if it would crawl. The whole platform has changed now.

yes thats exactly why.... elec motors make maximum power at maximum load...which is at 0 rpm...once you factor any gears in the axle you've got nothing but crawling power................. at avery low wheel speed...........

Heretique....i really dont think cooling will be an issue for my idea..... the engine runs too rich to get over 220....

Sounds good. I didn't know if it would be a problem or not.
