Bart, what are the specs on that boat. It looks HUGE! You can go to Bermuda on that thing when you get finished.[X(] Keep the pic's coming.

My thoughts so far. When I first got the boat I thought I had been given a return. The boat was full of scratches and looked to me s if someone had already tried to start sanding it with 50 grade sandpaper. I called Hobby Lobby and was told that is how the boats come from the manufacture. So I got to work. I read the directions which are a poor translation from German. They are complete, but some things dont make sense to me, other than the grammer.

The instructions indicate that you dont pain the deck until all the hardware is on it. Hmmm, I dont want everything white. So I am painting everything at the same time.

Between the diagrams and the directions, its not too hard to figure out so far.

The wood parts look like they were laser cut. I was dissapointed in the hull with all the scratches. It required alot of filler and sanding. Hobby Lobby included the deck railing so it will look scale.

So far I have only made 2 Oh Sh** [:@] I painted the hull before sanding it as good as I should have. The result was, me sanding off the paint and repaint it. Looks great now, IMHO. The second thing I did was break a part that was pre attacted to the hull. It holds a mast line on the stern of the boat. I ordered a stainless steel eyebolt that will probally be better in the long run.

Here are the stats for the boat: Length 37.5", Beam 10", Mast height 48", Overall height 63", Sail Area 592 sq.in.

It sounds like the part you broke needed replacing anyway, Bart. I don't like the idea of a little plastic part holding anything to the mast. That's crazy about the hulls coming so poorly formed. They must have some sorry molds.

If I reference the hull to your cordless drill, I guess the 37" length makes sense. Just the way your photo of the thing hanging in the garage made it look so big. Still, I think when the paint fumes clear you'll end up with a good looking boat. More pics!

Hi Jim,

On the Dutch MM forum is a section with pictures of several Saphires ( 26, I believe) being build by Dutch MM Pilots (who probably want to beat my Voyager ACC.....)

www.micromagic.nl/forum/index.php?...

Look on the bottom of the page, under MZGN, Saphir related topics.

Regards, Jan

They'll never catch you, Jan. You guys have really got some good active forums. It's great to see sailing so alive and active. That big MM boat is interesting. I'm going to have to do some more study about it....and their pretty sails. Thanks for the link.

They'll never catch you, Jan.
I'm sure giving them a run for their money...

Today we had a MM regatta, followed by some running of bigger boats: my Voyager, a Rubin (bigger) and a Smaragd (even bigger), downwind I was beaten by the boats with their longer waterlines and bigger sailsurfaces, half wind and upwind I'm pleased to see they were struggling to catch up, as I could point slightly higher, probably due to the differences in hulldesign.
And there's more to come when I make some proper panelled sails.

Needless to say I drove home with a smile from ear to ear....

Regards, Jan.

Bart - How is your Saphir coming along? Don't tell me you've let work come between you and your boat!

Well, I have been letting work get in the way of my building. I also had some problems with the raido board. Seems the sail servo that was included in the whole kit from Hobby-Lobby was too big for the slot in the radio board and the wood was too weak when I cut it to fit and it broke. I had my cousin help me with a new radio board made from plexy glass. I will upload some pics soon. And I also boat a full size bought, but dont throw me out because is is a powerboat. Here are a few pics of it. Its a 24' 1999 Bayliner.

Bart, I think if we toss you out for the powerboat, it will be from jealousy. That's a nice looking rig and actually I can see a certain compatability between it and your sailboats. Take your sailboat along and when you find that "special cove" with the winds and water just right, drop anchor and bust out the sailboat.[8D] Have the best of both worlds. But first you gotta finish the Saphir.[:-]
