Yes, you can easily enlarge (or reduce) the plans however you like, but bear in mind that enlarging the plans from 25-5/8" up to 39-3/8" (approx.) is a ratio of over 150%, and will likely compromise the boat's performance compared with boats that were designed to be One meters in the first place. The most likely problem will be increased displacement, which will call for greater weight. Of course, this can be worked out and adjustments can be made to make the boat sail properly, but it will take some fiddling, and you may never be competitive with a lighter boat. But who really knows for sure? There's really only one way to find out, and that's what makes a developmental class fun! Good luck...

Regards, Bill

One of the advantages of the metric system is that scaling is easier 65 cms > 100 cms = 153.85%. Generally, its safer scaling up than down, even though there are some RG-65 built as 65% one metres e.g. Laerke. Assuming most RG65s displace about 1 kg, you'ld end up with about 3.65 kg displacement as a 1 metre.

Thank you very much guys. I might try it just for fun and something to do over the winter. You never know what may come of this.

lightning mike:

If you want a nice rg 65 just build the jif2, it is very competitive even against the last generation wide transom rgs. In fact i recall I herad that in the 2008 sudamercan championship the second place was a Jif 2. Very nice and simple balsa hull.

Just try to keep weight down to a minimum. ( 950 grms. to 1 kilo)

I am looking at the Blue Splash for a build. Can you run the sails on a standard servo or is a winch needed? Where do you get the plans for the Jif 2? And do you make the hull out of balsa and fiberglass? I have been thinking of making one by vacuum molding a plastic hull. Has any one sand casted lead for a bulb?

Mike, if you're thinking of a one metre Blue Splash then you'll need a much heavier duty sail control servo; say something in excess of 250 oz/inch of torque or a winch. A standard servo on an RG65 would be sufficient. My partially built Blue Splash will have a GWS Micro 2BB MG servo for the sails and a micro for the rudder. The hull is sealed balsa only, although that probably wouldn't be strong enough if scaled up to one metre size.
http://rg65.free.fr/start.php is probably the best site for RG65 plans. It's a French site, but fairly straightfoward.

I think I might just try the rg65 version. How thick is the balsa that you used?

The balsa is 2 mm (the closest equivalent would be 3/32").
