Hi all,

Just bought the material for the sails !

2 square mt Blue and 2 square mt white...

Now, I need to learn who to make them... LOL

Jan, tks for the Technical Advise... it's a start...

Wis, can you send me those things about the sails ?

Another question...

I want to make the top of the mail sail as equal to the “Alinghi” sail.

It doesn’t drop like a typical triangle.

How do I make that part hold ? Double sided tape ? More sail material ? A piece of thin plastic ?

Here’s what I want to do.

Hi Luis,

You'll need battens to extend the top of the main.
Don't use too heavy material highup in the mast.

I've used carbon fibre, split into smaller and thinner pieces, which I stuck on the sail with spinaker repair tape.

As carbon is very stiff, you can make it as thin as a hair and have very light stiff battens.

I sanded the battens smooth and conical, so they bend towards the mast and get stiffer towards the outer edge, helping to get the profile right.

Wear protective gear when working with carbon the way I described.

Hi,

The sails are off the sailboat.
Next, I will draw the “new” sails in a big sheet of paper and then give it to a lady that is going to sew it all up (lol).
Minus the battens, that I will use double sided tape and small thin plastic strips.

News on the “ICE” sails soon…lol

Hi Luis,

I don't have good expriences with plastic sailbattens, they tend to warp and bend in all directions, but not the way you want them to bend, completely ruïning your sailshape.
Even worse were my double sided experiments.

The carbon "needles"work best for me.

As you can see, the luff is not round...

Do I have to give it a bit of roundness ?

Ok, the sails are in the “sewing” process...

The mail sail will be the same size and shape of the actual one, but blue he he he

The jib sail will have 2 sizes, the first is the same as the actual one and the second will be the same size as the original jib sail of the Voyager, in other words “smaller” (taking the advice from Jan)

The lady is going to sew my sails say “What is this fabric ? My machine can’t sew this..”

I replied: “Don’t worry, you have lot’s of fabric to test”

LOL

Sails “maybe” ready…Friday !

why sewing??? tape them!! double sided tape works great!

Wis is right, double sided tape will be strong enough.

When you're not carefull with sewing, you'll end up with baggy sails.

I tape my sails together and only sew the reinforced corners, where the sail-attach-eyelets come (see pic in the sail grommet post).

most sewing machines dont like ripstop nylon because it doesnt feed right with the "feed foot" of the sowing machine. Thus it winds up being bunched or the stiches are streched at the wrong tension etc.

(i know because i built a bunch of beach cairs that used the material for the back, it was a pain to work with)

I have not had wonderful results taping the nylon material, it works... but... well confidence in a little low with the method. Also, as Schmism points out..stretching can occur with some sewing machines feeding unevenly. This time around... I was prepared and did my homework and when we started setting up the new sail loft I got us a Pfaff dual action machine that feeds from the top and the bottom at the same time. The nylon material is good for many projects and I have high hopes that we will get good use of it in the future. It is not meant for competion sails for IOM's M's 10R's etc... but it does well for genoas and for inexpensive sails for smaller boats that are perfect for kids getting started and parents on a budget.;)

Your opinion was noted, but…

According to SAILSetc “(…) generally the tape serves only to hold the panels together until the sewing is finished (…)

Any comments ?

yes..they are professionals and their sails are for 10R, M's and IOMs...as the sail area is way different from our toys

I also forgot to say, that Nylon WILL stretch and that nylon is weak to UV...former kiter here!! well I still do indoor!!

I'd rather use Mylar or Trispi...didnt try to sew these materials, but it might be worth a try...though I'd stay with double sided tape.

Hi wis,

I only want to make new sails, because the old ones are “crapy”.

With the arrival of the Seawind, I will stick to the standard ones.

Saturday, I will attend an Expo, here in Lisbon, on Model Sailboats, cars and other stuff…

Has anybody used vellum for sails? IN the CAD world this is a thinner and much cheepr option than mylar.

for either you might check your local comercial blueprint place to see if they have any "end of rolls"/cut offs of either. (missprints works fine if you dont mind CAD all over the sails) but for free sail material to experiment with....

I now have to make a set (suit?) of sails for my grandson's Robbe Rainbow. The old ones didn't hold up too well to a soaking in Dawn.

Anyhow, Wally World sewing center has some iron type tape that says to NOT sew it afterward. Will this work for the lighter weight use that this boat will get on the pond? I'm planning on getting rip stop something to whip out a sail.

You could make a trip to the local florist and get a few sheets of the plastic foil they wrap the flowers in.
Works excellent for smaller boats and allows you to tape together cheap sailsuits to get the shape right, and transfer the measures to ripstop for a more "visable" set of sails.

You haven't had time to add the sailbattens I see, the rear edge looks a big baggy...

I know it's hard to sail AND take pics, but could you post some more, showing the sailshape , viewed from the transom?

I'm curious as to how the extended top looks.
