hey guys,
im looking to build a trimaran from scratch and have had a look around for a few plans but cant find any. could anyone point me in the right direction for some free plans... or even where i could get the complete specs for something like the B&Q trimaran that i could then scale down.

The plans of my Nightmare Mk VII (pdf.) can be sent to you - and every other interested person - for free!

Of course several modifications - like scale X-shape crossbars or wingmasts - can be applied by yourself,
but these plans will give you a stable basis to start with.

As an additional explaination:
I shape my hullplugs out of solid foam and cover them with three to four layers of 160 gr. glass (twill) with epoxy resin.
Then they are sanded (grain 40, 80, 120). PVA mold release is applied.
Then I laminate the lightweight shells with two layers of 160 gr. glass and two layers of 80 gr. glass.
Each single shell is sanded with the same sanding grains (40,80,120),
before I remove it from the plug.
This can be done with two layers of 160 gr. carbon also.

It is also possible, to cut out the cross sections from 3mm balsa and plank them up with 3mm balsa planks as well.
Then the hulls are covered with two layers of 160 gr. glass.

By now four trimaran prospects have received all necessary selfbuilding plans!

7 free selfbuildingplans in pdf. format have been sent out to prospects by now!

I´m already working on the design of "Nightmare Mk VIII".

All coordinates for new floats (more volume and even flatter keel rocker, higher freeboard at the bows))
and new mainhull (center of gravity even more aftward than before, higher bow freeboard as well)
are already here. Curved crossbars, if desired; - but everything else remains like it was on the Mk VII.

Is there anybody out there, who is able and willing to transform these data sets to a complete Autocad plan?
Cross sections, centerboard position, rc-set-up, rudder steering details, A-, B-, C- and D-rigg-dimensions and so on.

I definitely would need your help here.

Unfortunately I do not have any more contact to the person,
who was so nice to make the drawings of the Mk VII for all of us.

I am starting a new build the "Snapdragon" trimaran using the Traplet plans. I also got the Freight Train plans from Traplet and may try building that one in the future. Has anyone built and sailed the "Snapdragon" and if so are there any pitfalls to avoid. I am a very experienced builder and just completed a USOM. Being an accomplished multihull sailor of catamarans (Hobies, Tornados, Nacras) the thought of building a model multihull was intriguing. The Snapdragon plans do have good template details, but they lack overall details on radio placement shroud attachment and crossbar details. I can certainly overcome this, but if anyone has some thoughts to share I would appreciate it.

The Snapdragon built is moving along. The main hull is complete- no deck or internals yet. and I've set up the forms to begin planking the first float. I have decided to alter the crossbeams and go to a molded CF reinforced curved beam, versus the straight CF tubes on the plan. I am also going to angle the floats up slightly, versus having the decks at the same elevation. I will be going to a curved deck profile at the bows which will get faired out as it moves aft. This should give it a little more forgiveness if it buries. I'm also laying out the sailplan and rigging details. I'm planning on using a profile similar to my USOM with a B rig sized jib (30%) and a larger more powerful main. It should come in around 1100 sq ins or thereabouts. It should be ideal as it will get sailed predominantly in the lighter winds that we have here. Mini40 - I wouldn't mind getting a look at your latest Nightmare plans/sketches to see were the design ideas are evolving in this class. I've seen photos of the earlier versions and I like the overall look of the design. You can reach me at [email protected]. I'll post some photos of the build as soon as I get a chance.

It looks like the building season has really begun!
Today FOUR more persons asked for the free selfbuilding plans of the "Nightmare Mk. VII".
Makes 24 overall.

These are three .zip-files inkluding complete hull drawings, rudder, centerboard, rc- installation and rigging -

The left boat (yellow and purple) was designed and built by Karl Schmidt (nickname SKAUT) from AUSTRIA, who just won the latest Multihull-race series in FRANCE!
The boat on the right right side was designed by Peter Gernert (nickname WIESEL) from Germany.

which was designed by me - Ernst Zemann, Vienna/Austria - and was originally built by me, together with Eric Gielen at Austria - completed with the great help of Karl Schmidt, who took a lot of care for very good sets of sails!

Taken at her maiden testtrip seven moths ago - 2:19 min.
Although Eric had never sailed a rc-model trimaran before that date (!),
it is clearly visible how easyly and securely this design can be sailed on one float.

Hi im am a multihull sailor and am interested in the building the RC "Nightmare Mk.VII Trimaran". i was wondering where i can get the plans for this boat. i also read in the thread that you would like someone to draft out the plans in CAD. I use solidworks and i would like to try to convert it. thank you.

your design looks beautiful as well!
The plans of the "Nightmare Mk. VII" have been sent to you, as well as to several other interested persons.
As it is a proofen design, you can use it at least to compare it with your own ideas.
You must be ranging at plan No.30, if I didn´t count wrong.

as you requested per email, here are some more datas:
The overall ready to sail weight of the "Nightmare Mk.VII"-Prototype is 2800gr.
Floats are 380gr. each, maihull was around 800gr. without rc-set or armwinch (HITEC).
As I didn´t complete the boat myself - which was done by the owner Eric Gielen, together with Karl Schmidt -
who is the President of the Austrian NAVIGA-Rc-Sailing-Assoziation -
they added some components which made the boat heavier than I planned.
It was designed for 3000gr. ready-to-sail-weight,
but could have been at 2600gr. if they had done it like I suggested to them.

Anyway - the floats have an overall volume of 7500 cm2 -
which is the proper relation of 250-300% of the overall boatweight!

Some more pics. File size limits what can be sent at one time. The boat sails great. It is very quick to accelerate and has minimal tendency to bury the bow. It tacks very well, as long as you maintain a little boatspeed going in. I wish I had taken some pictures on the water but it will have to wait now until spring since my local sailing site is as hard as rock right now. The sails were made to my spec by Rod Carr of Carr sails. He did a great job and the workmanship is first class. The sails measure in at about 1100 sq in. All the rigging is from Midwest Model Yachting and is predominantly Sails Etc hardware - again first class. Over the winter I will be experimenting a little bit with different size fins and rudders. The current rudder does have a "wing" to help drive the stern down and bows up on acceleration, but I will be making several other shapes (mostly longer) and probably try some without a wing. The boat is not "superlight" and comes in around 5.5 lbs fully rigged. I will be building a couple of other new boats over the winter as well including the Nightmare Mk VII and I will be looking at possibly making a series of moulds this time versus the glass over balsa that was used on this tri. That way I can experiment with different cloth weights, including carbon fibre. Looking forward to the next series of builds.

now as I can see the details of your boat i really have to say you did a great craftsmanship job! Well done, man!
And 5.5 lbs. - that should be only 2.5 kgs., if I didn´t calculate wrong - which is also a very good (low) value.

I would be very pleased if you could find the time during the winter,
to build one or two of my "nightmare"-designs and be able to sail them against your current boat next spring!

If you are really into making moulds let me tell you, that I do not ask for any royalty fees if you use my designs -
not now and not for the future.
If you have any chance to get into production with these boats, just do it!
