Are these stripes white or tan?
Are these stripes white or tan?
Hard to tell by photos, maybe someone knows the aircraft?
As you can see, white in one photo then tan in the other?

RE: Are these stripes white or tan?
Why would you care about color matching this model? Do you have any photos of the original aircraft? As Jim suggests you can look to see if the white boarder on the cross is "brighter" than the background.

If you look at the photos, clearly they are two different models. Obviously, they appear and look to be different. If I had photos of the actual aircraft, they would probably be B&W. But guys restore aircraft all the time. generally getting the colors incorrect, but no one cares.
The bright white and red are "candy cane" not really what I'm looking for.
I have this Albatros, I just want to make it a bit more interesting. Unless I can sell it first.

RE: Are these stripes white or tan?
A couple of years ago Joe Hansen flew a 1/3 scale Albi at the HDP done in this scheme. His was white between the red. It looked good and was unique, and I can't recall a single person questioning the shade of the color. He and it was also one of the featured segments and on the cover of SKS video of 2007 Warbirds over Delaware, if you want to see it.

I guess I just don't get the philosophy behind this. Why go to all the trouble and cost to restore or replicate an aircraft but not bother to get the colors right (or even just ball-park right). And if you're not worried about "color matching" (or only want to match a model, which may or may not be correct anyway, why not just go with what makes you happy?
Just to make myself happy, I build scratch built scale models or build scale kits.
Sure, this is just a play thing, but it would be nice to "model" it after a real aircraft. So I just went on line looking for photos of something interesting.
That restoration thing and color. Sure they plenty of research, but sometimes it comes down to photographs or print ink in older books. Not all that reliable. Also keep in mind, most of these Museum Restoration Places, get their money from private donations and sometimes, a lot actually, the Federal Government, "grants." It's not their money!

The cross-border fields were applied at the factory. The red and white stripes were painted after. Even if they used the exact same paint (unlikely) they would almost certainly appear different. My suspicion is that the modeler of the plastic model in the first two photos got carried away with trying to show the difference.

Am I missing something here?
All three photos ( in the first post ) are of the same model. The difference being the light source used. In the first two pictures some kind of overhead ambient light was used. Probably just a standard incandescent light.
In the third photo only the camera flash was used. I think that the paint in question is probably a warm-tone white. Also the cloth backdrop shows more yellow-ish / antique-ish in the first two pics and a more pure white in the third pic. It's all in the lighting / illumination of the suject that makes it appear to be painted different.
In my opinion...of course.
But what do I know?
....only been playing with cameras since 1977.

rcphotog,
You're correct!
I was so focused on the model, I didn't notice that it's the SAME model in each photo.
Same model, it's the light source that is changing the color.

abufletcher,
WOW! and Bingo!
I guess white is the color. At least by the looks of that model kit.
I do like the off white better.
abufletcher, thanks for that!
I appreciate it!

RE: Are these stripes white or tan?
Just stumbled upon this thread, and you've hit it right. It's the lighting source of the photos that's causing the "problem".
The first two were taken with an incandescent "warm" lighting source, and the third with a "natural" or full spectrum lighting source.

charles you can paint it white, and with a bit of weathering white goes tan as it gets dirty. maybe more tan on the bottom of fuse ect. it will add character!! and wont look like a candy cane.
