Piper Pawnee
I have just bought a N.I.B. Hanger 9 Piper Pawnee from someone who was moving. The plane is 80" wingspan and calls for a 40-52 size engine. This seems somewhat inadequate to me, has anybody any experience with this plane? I have available an OS 46, an OS 55ax, and an Evolution 61. Which should I use?

I have an older version of that model (one of the first ones out) and I used an OS .91 2 stroke mounted sideways with a Pitt’s muffler. It flys great even off floats. The engine mount is so far forward I recommend mounting the engine then moving the other equipment to help with the CofG. I usually mount the engine and fuel tank then assemble the plane. Then I use double sided tape and stick the radio equipment and battery to the outside to try and get the CofG right. This tells me where inside I will have to mount everything. It still took a few oz in the tail to get it right. I also found the wing loading a little light for windy days and found that filling up the aluminum wing tube with lead added about a pound and really tamed the plane on windy days. With out doing this fully extending the flaps would cause the plane to balloon now I can fully deploy the flaps and the plane will not balloon and you can fly a missed approach with the flaps down without worry of the nose pitching up and stalling. This is my loaner plane for visiting pilots and it replaced a very old Great Planes 1/4 scale Spacewalker that was used for this task. It had to be scale, easy yet fun to fly and capable of some aerobatic maneuvers. I fills all these criteria very well. Spend the time to get it set up properly and you will enjoy flying it for many years. Full flaps and a hard side slip and you can achieve a very steep landing approach.

I had the .91 from when I retired the Spacewalker so since the Pawnee was of similar configuration, wing span, length, weight etc it just seemed natural to drop it in. Since I fly around at 1/2 throttle or less most times a .46 2 stroke or even a .56 four stroke would most likely do the job. I intended on putting it on floats so the extra power was my idea.

As to the .91 2 stroke I used it because I had it. Is it over powered. That depends on your flying style. If you fly it scale with appropriate take off runs and climb outs along with flying it on the wing then yes its more than you need as I can do all this at half throttle. If you are looking to do large verticals and other non scale maneuvers where you might need a bit of power to get you out of trouble then the .91 is plenty. Remember throttle management is the key even if you do like I do and fly it about the sky at 1/2 throttle. It’s always nice to have a little extra power if needed to compensate for a mistake or laps in attention. I even think a good .61 would be more than adequate. I have seen a few as an electric and they are very smooth and fly well on modest motors and battery packs. Its one of those models because of its light wing loading offer a multitude of choices on the type of power that will work.

I fly mine on an old O.S. .61 2 stroke and it is more than adequate power. I would have loved to go with something in the .80 range 4 stroke but the .61 was available. It fits totally inside the cowling, with an on board glow driver there is no hole for a glow starter either. Absolute joy to fly.

I went electric - Power 60 - has extra power when needed. I also changed out the main and tail gear.

Hi All
I finally bought myself the Hanger 9 Piper Pawnee and I want to know if any one have or at sometimes flew this plane with a 61 four stroke motor ? I like my scale (civillian) Planes and I like to fly it scale as well so speed is not a factor for me that is why I am going Four Stroke...
