Default Rust and crud

I just finished the dummy exhausts for my SE5a and IMHO they turned out really CRUDDY! Just how I wanted them! So do you have some lovely rust and crud on your models? If so, post a cruddy photo!

That looks very nice. Perhaps a little bright on the front end, nailed it overall. Looks very realistic out the aft end of the stack. Well beyond my ability. Good looking ship.

Thanks, the photos make the red look a little redder than it looks in person. But then these exhaust stacks really did go red quickly with the heat. Painting them really couldn't have been easier. I just slapped on some Steel acrylic (with a brush) and then dry-brushed on some rust brown. But what somehow really brought it all together was when I sprayed it with a clear rustroleum to fuel proof it. This seems to have softened the acrylic paint and interacted with it in all sorts of funky ways. A lucky accident. Oh, and I should mention that the exhausts were first sprayed with a grey automotive primer. Maybe that's what's creating the interesting effect with the fuel-proofing layer.

The exhausts themselves are made entirely from lithoplate.

I was quite happy with the result on my 1/4 scale gnome half engine. This was my first attempt to paint an engine. I build this one using the WB cylinders and made the crank from ply. Paints are from humbrol with a clear coat.

What model is the for? Not the EIII since you'd need a full dummy for that. Have you got some other round-cowl model in the works? Also, don't the Gnome cylinders need to be taller and the crankcase smaller? But then there were different Gnomes. Yours looks similar to the 9b (as seen in the Roden model).

You are absolutely right. I made this 7-cil version for my 1:3.5 scale own design D-VIII. I took the easy way and used the (too small) 1/4 scale cylinders from WB and made the crank about scale size. That's why the cylinders look too small. This D-VIII is a kind of stand-off scale

It looks great in the model! And the model looks great too. Nice to see a DVIII with those big orange circles on the wings!

But, hey, everybody, WHERE'S THE CRUD??? Show us your cruddiest models, show us the deep, oily grime...the caked on mud, and rusting parts.

Nice looking exhausts! Gives me encouragement to start mine which I've been putting off as my 'last' task..but which I'll starting shortly Did you use the dry brush technique in getting your coloring? I've never tried it before but I plan try it this time using some Humbrol paints. Just hope mine turn out as good as yours...

Yes, it's a steel acrylic undercoat and then dry brushed with rust brown. The key for dry brushing is for the brush to really be dry! There should be almost no paint left and when you start "stabbing" the brush on the piece you shouldn't really see any paint being transferred. But just keep at it and it will start to build up some color.

Thanks for the info. Well, we're going to give a try, testing the technique on a scrap piece first. Should be interesting...

Hey, Dai Phan! Long time no see! Welcome back!!! Do I fly? Every chance I get! But it seems to be mostly with ARFs. But I'd like to move away from that. A better question might be "do I work?" And the answer to that is "hardly."

Well, the SE5a is...DONE! So after I fly it and get my workshop back in shape, I'll continue with the CI. In the meantime, I think I'll add some dirty to my SE5a.

Hi all,

This is my newest completed project the 56" span FMS Stuka in its "rust and crud". It's a repainted ARF foamy. DP

Hi ST

Nice built on that DII. I used to fly wooden planes but I got so nervous so I fly just simple foamies now. But being a scale buff, I repainted most of my planes so they can be as scale as possible within reason given to a foamy. In fact I kept telling myself that is just a foamy so I don't go overboard. In terms of small(er) electric WWI the AerodromeRC kits are the best around! All very scale and wonderfully designed. I've certainly been tempted. Dai Phan, great looking gritty winter scheme on your Stuka. I understand about the foaming thing, but really having your knees shaking on a maiden (and even on subsequent flights) is just part of the hobby...it reminds us that we are alive! I love to build, but there's little than compares with the rush of a successful maiden flight of a model we build ourselves.

Good subject Don. And your SE-5 turned out great!!

Here are a couple of pictures of my Hansa-Brandenburg C-1. The dummy engine modeled is an Austro-Daimler 120hp, water cooled in-line 6. I used Testors Model Masters enamels applied with a torn piece of rubber foam on the pipes. An airbrush is also a good tool to apply dirt and 'wear'.

Take care,
John
