Default 1/2 Scale Fok EIII in progress

Hi it's Doc and I'm going to start a thread on finishing up an EIII at 1/2 scale. Most of the framing is finished and details both interior and exterior are what I will be involved with. For the covering I'm going to ambush a clubmate of mine who just finished covering and painting an Aeronca (SP?) and does this kind of thing on an irregular basis. At half scale there wont be much deviation from how it's done full scale. The landing gear is the biggest item left to build and the center post for the landing wires and warp cables still has to be fabricated. I am working up a way to re do the stabs and rudder as they are done with the ply core method with ribs and I am sure I can save a good bit of weight going with carbon reinforced ally tube for the outline and carbon main spar with an ally joiner tube, the stabs must be removable for transport. I wont actually be doing anything to it for a few weeks as I am finishing painting and detailing a 1/4 N28 for a friend. Till then if anybody has anything to say/add/contribute please do, Ill be looking and more than willing to discuss. I am not an eindecker expert and appreciate any help Y'all can turn my way
Later Doc

Glad to see it's down off the wall and back onto the building board! It's looking very good!

Hey Doc,

Glad to see a thread started for your half scale Eindecker! I am subscribed!

I flew a third scale EI for several years in competition.......is was a magnificent flying airplane. I did most of the manuvering with the tail and used the wing warping to level the wings. I started a turn with both rudder and wing warp in the direction of the turn, then used rudder to hold the turn (more or less as needed) and opposite wing warp to level the wings. Kind of backwards the way most people look at it, but not too uncommon for a variety of the early pioneer and WW1 aeroplanes.

Are you pointing toward the 2014 Dayton Dawn Patrol Rendezvous for a completion date?

Cheers,
Art

Hey Art, thanks for looking in. I am not the project owner, sort of chief mechanic and provider of finishing services. We hope it's flying before that but that is the ultimate aim. It's half done so there's only 80% left to do. Ought to be a walk in the park.LOL

Doc

Having been in your shop, and it is not small by any means, how are you going to fit that plane in your shop? Hope it will not be like building a boat in the basement and then finding you can not get it out.

Can't weight to see the progress. How big is the diameter of the cowl? It dwarfs the big guy's cowl.

As far as getting it out of the shop, it's no problem as everything is removable, wings stabs Rudder. I have to ck the width of the gear, my door is 48" wide. I dont want to have remove the gear because of the warp linkage.

Just wondering how the half scale build is going. I have become entangled in a web of half scale intrigue and it swirls around the Eindecker. Could you post some up close shots of the wing construction (especially the rib) and how the stab is constructed and also how it and the rudder are detachable.......unless, of course, that'a all proprietory information. (And I think you're ok with getting the gear out the door!)

Cheers,
Art
