RE: Andy Sheber Pitts s1s
For all you guys that visit my thread and know a bit about the Pitts, I have a question. Would a 170cc engine be too overpowering of a 2.17-1 scale Pitts with a95inch wingspan and a weight of around 36lbs? The 2.43m one from here http://vogelsang-aeroscale.com/emhwpitts1-21.html

That's a relative term isn't it, "too overpowering"?
I'm sure there would be an excess of power, but can there be too much power? I doubt it - but you might need to study up on throttle management.
An 8' wingspan bipe is pretty large. I think the airframe would handle it ok.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Robert, thats me just getting round to fitting my own IP today. I'll post a picture later.
I'm hoping to get it flying next weekend and i'm also hoping the battery on the smoke pump is still holding a charge too. Enjoy your well earnd break where ever you go

Hi Robert,
I have a 3W-157 TS which is their competetion series on my Waco and at 10ft and 60ish pounds it has plenty of pull, it will pull it thru very large loops from level flight without any issues. A 170 on a 35lb plane would be more than enough power to do whatever you want.
That would be one really impressive Pitts.

Art, I meant the question in the sense of the airframe, yes there can be to much. Firewalls can be torn off, don't ask.
Thank's John I'm sure I will.
Anthony my thoughts are it would be way too much. It call's for a 120cc and the only one I can find, reasoable priced, is a ZDZ. Don't know anything about ZDZ. My choices are a DLE111, DLE170, ZDZ 120, orRCGF 150. But of course there's alway's DA. I did find a youtube video of the same Pitts with the ZDZ120 it flew very well but all the shots were flat and level. I have plenty of time before needing the engine. So I may use the characteristics of the 33% to judge how much power the 47% may need. I have been told by many the 55cc in this 33% is not enough. So it will be a good test bed.

I would think a DLE-170 would be comparable to a top end 150 engine (ZDZ/3W) DLE are good engines but they are not powerhouses for their displacement IMO. Ken Spears aka Big_Bird has a DA-150 in his 42% Decathalon and it fly's it very well. He has a video on youtube. His plane weighs 75lbs. It is a big plane. Here is a link to the video. I have been pouring through YT videos and came across this one. It is the same model with a MVVS 112. After seeing it I have decided the DLE 111cc will be quite enough. Check out the climb at take off. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxb70...yer_detailpage

RE: Andy Sheber Pitts s1s
A bit of an update as to where I am at. It came to a screeching halt while waiting for the fabric to finish the recover. During that time we decided to take a mini vacation while the wife was in transition for a new job. We left Sunday and came back yesterday, a few days early, because her mom got ill. She lives with us, we are her caretakers. Anyway, now I am going to wait until Monday to get back at it as working on an airplane is a bit difficult with the wife home. She goes back to work on Monday and so will I on the Pitts.
On the other Pitts I am waiting on Guts from Vogelsang-Aeroscale to get back to me with a price. It will be shipped to me directly from Germany as he is out of that size. So for now I am in a holding pattern. As for the engine I mentioned I did some more research. And it would appear that DLE is a bit weaker in hp than the ZDZ or MVVS in the videos. So I am now thinking the DLE170 may be a better fit.

RE: Andy Sheber Pitts s1s
I was asked for my wood list for this Pitts. Thought I'd post it for anyone that would be interested.I used a little thicker than called for on the wing ribs, which is the 3/16x4x42@20pcs.
size type #pcs
3/32x3x32 balsa 20
1/4x4x48 balsa 2
1/2x4x48 balsa 1
1x4x36 balsa 1
2x3x36 balsa 1
3/16x4x42 balsa 20
3/32x12x48 5plybirch 2
1/8x12x48 lite ply 1
1/8x12x48 5plybirch 2
1/4x12x24 5plybirch 2
That list does not include hardwood. That I buy from the local lumber yard. I like to use Aspen and Poplar. It comes in 1/4", 1', and 2' x 3&4" x36. Aspen is the best in my opinion, lighter and just as strong as the spruce and harder woods.
Anyone else building a pitts is welcome to post.

RE: Andy Sheber Pitts s1s
Sounds like you have your hands full there Billy. As for me my plans of covering commencing tomorrow got thrown out the window. Two things happened this morning, one is the wife says she wants me to take her to orientation tomorrow. And the second is she decided to move her office from the room next to my model room to a spare bedroom at the other end of the house. This means I can use the room abutting mine to put my finished planes in, which gives me twice the room in my shop. So in between taking and picking her up, which is 3 hours round trip, I will be spending tomorrow finishing up the move and rearranging my shop to accomodate the extra space. Down side is it will be longer before getting back to the covering, up side is much more needed space. Especially with the 2.43m Pitts up next.

The day is coming to an end. My room is cleaned back up and ready for the recover to continue. It is much roomier now as well, and tools are not packed into a small space. Here is a shot of the 46% paint scheme, if and when I get one.

Vincent my current table top is 2' x 6', I have one in the shed that is 3' x 8' and will need it for the 46%er. The extra space is most definitely welcome with the bigger table. Well the time has come, recover has commenced. The stabilizer is done. Woo Hoo!
