If it was easy everyone would do it and then it wouldn't be as fun to watch! Heating the vinyl for removal reminds me of rehabilitating the looks of the old "woody" sides of automobiles. The auto makers went to using vinyl to give a simulated wood look on the sides of some vehicles and adding a nice up charge for it too! I remember I bought an old Oldsmobile Wagon on the cheap as a family car and the vinyl was flaking all over, a real mess (and the price I paid reflected it). I was able to pop the chrome trim off around the simulated wood and use a heat gun to remove the vinyl in large pieces. It took a couple of hours but the car looked great after the chrome trim was back on. The trim hid the slight discolor from fading between the areas.

The wings have their red parts painted. Also painted some accessories while I was at it to get them out of the way. Not much to see being taped up and all but here ya go.

Later today I will mask over the red, remove what's needed and mask for the blue. One thing is for sure, once the wings are done the hardest part will be over.

Well just because I can't add the mask for the blue that does not mean I can not remove the existing mask where the blue goes. I would like to say "I love using vinyl like this", very clean crisp lines and easy to remove, now that I know how. I most definitely will use it again, it is much easier than taping and paper.

Looking good Robert, can't think of a better way to mask myself, you can do so much with the vinyl mask sheets, like some very nice graphics as I found out when I did the SW, super stuff and the low adhesion vinyl tape really does a great job going over the stitching leaving a very crisp line. Like you I wonder why it took so long to find this great product. I think price had something to do with it in the past but it's a case of you get what you pay for with this stuff, not to mention the results.
Paint can be fun when your results are striking.

Well, too much work, then took off to the mountains for a weekend getaway, then started checking my thread subscriptions today. Just now got caught up on this one.
WOW Robert! That's looking GREAT! A lot of work, but it is going to pay off big time in the end. Can't wait to see that eagle go on. That is going to be something!

I have started masking, made it through the bottom right panel, started on the left, and ran out of tape. Guess where I will be going first thing in the morning, yep, Ace. I should still be able to get the blue on and unmask tomorrow though.

Yesterday I placed an order for the logo decals with Gary from Decal-It. They were in rough shape but he made them look like new. I can't remember how to convert from PDF to JPEG so cubflyerfresno did it for me. The one to the right is a shot of an original decal.

Gary does great work in case anyone is interested here is a sample of what he has done for me. You will want to click on the photo to enlarge it or download it for viewing to see the detail. The photo has a dime in the middle to give you and idea of the size. Check out the detail on S/N plate it looks like it came off the full size airplane! I have made multiple orders from Gary and each has been second to none in quality.

You would think so wouldn't ya! But, I am pretty much burnt out and just want it to end. Last night the wife asked "what was next", "I said not a bloody thing". I have never said or felt that way before. I am sure it will pass. Maybe about the time I pull "all" the mask off the wings????

The wings have received their blue. I will let it air out for a couple hours and then pull all the mask. I may even start taping the fuse and tail feathers tonight. So! The wings, ailerons, wheel pants, struts, slave rods, stab supports, and the small metal pieces are done other than the gold pinstriping. I have not decided whether I am masking and painting the gold or use actual pinstriping, probably use the premade striping.

Whilst I sit and watch paint dry let me take a minute to say thanks.
Thank you to everyone for your words of wisdom and encouragement during this build. It is truly appreciated and at times motivational. Builds like this are nicer when one has the support of so many friends. Again, thanks!!
