Kit Bashing Accessories & In Between Scale
So I want to do (ARF bash) another plane without spending too much money. I've always wanted another SE5a and ECOMRC has a 71" wingspan that can take a 30cc engine. Well I just happen to have a 30cc engine and gorgeous WWI full body pilot available and a lot of little stuff from a 1/4 scale SE5a that was destroyed on her maiden flight several years ago. By wingspan the EcomRC SE5a is 22% which obviously is between 1/5 and 1/4 scale. So my problem is this. If I want to add a lot of touches (guns, doors, hatches, etc) which scale to use visually - the 1/5 stuff or the 1/4 stuff. Before I plunk down the cash for this project, would anyone care to comment on this scale issue. The pic is of the EcomRC plane. thanks.

The question is how close is the rest of the plane to the 22%? I would be making paper guns at 1/4 and 1/5 to see how it looks or you could just rip your own out. It will all be on what you see as a better choice; my choice reasoning is going to be different than yours. The hatches and stuff will be custom, so you will be able to pin to your own liking. Are you going to re cover or go with their covering? The best thing is buy and fix up to your liking.

20% to 22% is a 10% increase, while 22% to 25% is a 14% increase. So, that would say that 1/5 scale acc's would be closer to correct size, assuming the plane is accurate to 22%. . But I have found that it's really up to the eye. try a few things and see. Honestly, the pilot and guns would be the only 2 things you would probably purchase anyway. Like TFF says, hatches, panels, etc you can easily scratch., and guns are fairly easy to make. Once you get going, you'll come up with ideas for it all.

I'm not sure if I would be able to see any accessories through the intense glare of that monocoat! Seriously, the FIRST modification I would make would be to knock down that high-gloss finish. This might be as simple are scuffing it up with steel wool...or even better giving it all a coat of semi-flat clear, for example, from Nelson's...or even just MinWax PolyC.
