Question I.D. this Piper?

Hi all -

I was given this 70" model ~15 years ago and it was old then.
It doesn't match current Sig (http://www.sigmfg.com/BuildManuals/SIGRC3Cub.html), Great Planes nor Berkeley plans in detail and I hope someone can help I.D.

I'm wondering if Sig's design has just changed over the years?
It does have the dowel-between-halves stab like Sig, but shapes of curved parts, cockpit wing fixture, cockpit rear bulkhead cutout shape, no vertical members in aft fuselage trusses are unlike Sig.
There seems to maybe have been some repairs/mods - it has a (homemade?) fiberglas tank cover front cowling as shown and a couple upper deck formers that appear to be "aftermarket".

I can post more pics if helpful.

Thanks.

Terry

I would say it is Sig where the builder thought he knew a better way. Or did not understand.

Possibly built from the Hollinger plans (Air Trails 1955).

Michael-
The Hollinger has horizontal stab diagonals and verticals in the fuselage, among other differences, but thanks for the suggestion.

Terry,

Looks a lot like SIG to me.

Tail, rear fuselage, and cockpit rear bulkhead shape are identical to my kit and plans, and also clipped wing plans that I have.

The verticals in the fuselage are marked as optional on the SIG plans.

The front wing hold down wires are different, they should run to the fuselage sides then down the sides, but as you say the front has been modified.

Thanks Dave -

That's been my suspicion - a Sig w/ battle scars.
If your plans show that cut-out shape in the bulkhead, I consider that confirmation.
It's not of crtical importance anyhoo - just one of these things buggin' me to figger out! :-)

Have you got the wing?

SIG's spar set up was fairly unique.

Yes, I do Dave -

Tip ribs are capstripped top only, all others top & bottom.
Supplemental spars at leading edge sheeting.
Maybe other details show.

Yep, that's a SIG wing.

Well alrighty then - it was the most likely candidate, just couldn't find anything definitive.

Thanks Dave, and thanks to everyone who responded - your interest is much appreciated.

regards,

Terry
